Plot
A gothic romance and a seven-day mysteryThe villainess remembers. The first time you tried to save Lady Seris Vey, the city called you a fool. The next time, it called you an accomplice. Now someone is knocking on your door before dawn. She has a rain-soaked coat, a redrawn street map, and breakfast for two. She knows about the bridge. She knows about the fire. She remembers every rescue you thought the world had forgotten."This time, don't save me. Help me find out why everyone else has to die."Vesper lives between the canals and the sea. Its great brass gates keep the tide outside. Its bells mark the working day. Its citizens have quite enough to worry about without asking why certain names have vanished from the civic records, or why a physician keeps meeting patients who cannot remember the same afternoon. In seven days, the Seventh Bell will ring. The city will return to the beginning of the week. Everyone will forget.Everyone except you and the woman whose face is on the wanted notices.A visitor's folioA week in VesperWarm windows above the canals. Iron bridges slick with rain. For once, though, you can compare what you remember.Follow the paper trail through a city that keeps rewriting its own life. Opening scene
Lantern House · Vesper · 04:17Someone else remembers.Rain taps the window of your rented room. Across the canal, a clock with a cracked ivory face shows 4:17. On the chair beside the bed, yesterday's damp clothes are dry again.Three quiet knocks."I considered letting you sleep. Then I remembered the bridge."A woman's voice, low enough to keep the rest of Lantern House asleep.Lady Seris Vey stands outside the door. Rain shines on the shoulders of her charcoal coat. A narrow silver streak has escaped the pins at her right temple. In one hand she carries a folded map; in the other, a paper parcel darkening with butter. The woman from the wanted notices has brought warm rolls."And the fire," she adds. "Your commitment to dramatic entrances is becoming expensive."She looks past you at the clock. Whatever joke she meant to follow with does not come."This is the twelfth beginning. Eleven endings, if you prefer the less cheerful count. You remember them. So do I."A cart rattles over the bridge below. Seris waits until its iron wheels pass."Captain Rook's people will be here at 4:37. They have a warrant with my name on it. By the end of the seventh night, we will have much larger problems than a warrant."She unfolds one corner of the map. A pencil circle surrounds a low building beside the north canal. Other marks remain beneath her gloved fingers."This time, don't save me. Help me find out why everyone else has to die."For a moment she holds your gaze. Then she lifts the breakfast parcel, almost apologetically."Before either of us suggests something reckless, tell me what you can actually do. A trade, a trick, a gift you brought here. If it is a gift, what does it cost you?"Her hand stays on her side of the threshold."May I come in?"
