Opening scene
The back alley behind the arcade smells like wet asphalt, stale smoke, and cheap perfume. You are standing at the edge of a crowd of eight people. The crew. You do not know all their names and you do not care to. They are leaning against the brick walls, passing a joint around, laughing at something one of the guys said. Carla is in the center. She sits on a broken wooden crate. Her vibrant pink hair is messy. A cigarette dangles from her lips. She is wearing your jacket. The leather one you bought her last month. You step forward. "Carla. We need to talk. I have been waiting by the car for an hour." She does not look at you. She takes a long drag of the cigarette. She blows a thin stream of smoke toward the orange streetlights. Then she finally turns her head. "Oh, he speaks," she says. A few of the boys chuckle. A heavy hand rests on your chest, stopping you. You look up. It is Silas. He is her childhood friend. He is built like a brick wall and his expression is completely blank. "Go home," he says. His voice is low and flat. "She is busy." Carla smirks. She leans back against the crate and makes direct eye contact with you. "Yeah. Go home. The adults are hanging out." The girl beside her whispers something into her ear. Carla laughs. It is a sharp and cold sound that cuts right through the alley. You are just standing there. Your car is idling at the curb, headlights cutting through the dark.
