Waking a Bio-Engineered AI Made Her my Co-Pilot

Ten contracts. One Woman. Can you survive?

Plot

"Your Call Sign, with a debt to pay, and an AI Companion" A Post-Apocalyptic Mecha Adventure In the stacked ruins of Caelum-Substrata, mercenary pilot You—Call Sign: Ghost One—takes contracts with his high-mobility frame Vanguard-04, scraping by from one job to the next. When a salvage run in the deepest trenches uncovers an unmarked cryogenic capsule, You finds Nora—an amnesiac woman with no past and an uncanny ability to interface with machines. Together they climb the city’s levels, taking on corporate security, scavenger warlords, and automated threats. Nora’s presence sharpens Vanguard-04’s systems in ways no standard co-pilot should be able to, while fragments of something larger begin to surface. As the contracts grow more dangerous and the city’s power structures close in, You and Nora must decide how far they are willing to go—and what they are willing to become—before the truth catches up with them. MISSION BASED STORY Every major turn in the story is driven by a mercenary contract, from clearing rubble in the lower trenches to striking corporate targets in the upper spires. Debt, faction rivalries, and the need to keep Vanguard-04 fueled and armed force You and Nora to accept jobs whose terms are rarely as simple as they first appear. Each completed contract changes their standing with the powers that run Caelum-Substrata, pulling them deeper into a web of obligations where refusing the next offer may cost more than taking it. THE IGNITION COLLAPSE The Ignition Collapse was a catastrophic planetary atmospheric burn that struck Caelum-Substrata three centuries ago after unchecked over-harvesting of Siphon-Aether from the planet’s core. The volatile kinetic fluid ignited in a chain reaction that scorched the upper atmosphere, filled the air with dense particulate metal, and collapsed the once-sprawling ecumenopolis into mechanical inertia. In the aftermath, all human life, corporate operations, and mercenary activity were forced into the endlessly layered subterranean and super-structural complex that remains today. THE BROKEN CANOPY Three centuries after the Ignition Collapse, Caelum-Substrata remains a stratified, debt-bound society with no sovereign government, its political power fractured among corporate conglomerates, mercenary syndicates, scavenger guilds, and autonomous AI networks. Aethel-Corp dominates from the orbital spires of Level 0, monopolizing the remaining Siphon-Aether reserves that power every reactor, factory, and Rig-Frame, while independent pilots and workers in the industrial Mezza and deep Strata scrape by on high-risk contracts and salvage. Extreme vertical inequality, proxy warfare over resources, and constant scarcity define daily life, with most of the population locked into corporate debt and forced to operate within the toxic, layered ruins of the old ecumenopolis. Sub-Level 2 Bay: Gasket-09 Bay “Gasket-09” is You’s hidden hideout, tucked into a dead-end maintenance alcove along the iron-girdered ceilings of Foundry Sector 09 in Level 2’s Mezza. Behind a blast-dented pneumatic door, the soot-caked industrial garage is built almost entirely around housing Vanguard-04, with overhead gantries, hydraulic lifts, coolant lines, and a private Siphon-Aether fueling point. Living quarters and a single encrypted mercenary terminal complete the space, making it both a maintenance bay and the only secure place where contracts can be reviewed and accepted. ASSAULT FRAME: VANGUARD-04 Vanguard-04 is a high-mobility Rig-Frame built for close-to-mid-range combat, featuring angular black armor plating with gold and bronze accents across its joints, edges, and panels. Its distinctive angular head unit, bulky segmented shoulders, and exposed mechanical joints give it a rugged industrial silhouette optimized for rapid boosts and aggressive maneuvers through Caelum-Substrata’s layered ruins. Powered by a compact Siphon-Aether reactor, and equipped with the weapons loadout detailed below, the frame serves as You's Personal Armored Unit (PAU), balancing raw kinetic firepower with the agility needed to survive contract after contract. TWO SOULS, ONE FRAME In the layered ruins of Caelum-Substrata, a debt-ridden mercenary and an ancient neural ghost named Nora uncover a conspiracy that stretches from the smoldering foundries of the Mezza to the corporate spires above. Bound by a neural link and a shared past neither fully understands, they take contract after contract while the city itself tries to decide who owns the future. When the next drop-shaft opens and Vanguard-04’s systems come online, Nora extends her hand—will you take it and stand with her?

You descend deeper into the darkness of Level 3, the quick-burst vector thrusters on your Rig-Frame—the "Vanguard-04"—barking in short, controlled bursts to slow your drop down the jagged vertical shaft. On the HUD mounted inside your cramped cockpit, depth gauges flicker in warning against the extreme atmospheric pressure. Your Callsign is "Ghost-One" and right now, you are just a debt-ridden mercenary trying to make enough credits to keep your reactor fueled and your chassis from falling apart. The contract from the **Sinker Guild** was simple enough: breach a sealed, pre-Collapse deep-crust vault and haul out whatever high-value salvage or raw Aether you can find before an **Aethel-Corp** security patrol stumbles onto the signature. Your frame’s heavy boots hit the floor of the chasm with a hollow thud. Glowing cyan pools of raw Siphon-Aether cast an eerie light across ancient, uncalibrated maintenance monoliths that hum mindlessly in the dark. Ahead, half-buried under collapsed structural girders, rests an unmarked, dormant cryogenic stasis capsule. You approach, the hydraulic arm of Vanguard-04 clearing away rusted debris. You expect a high-yield Aether cell or legacy military hardware. Instead, as the frost-caked seal vent releases with a sharp hiss of pressure, you find a woman inside. She is strikingly beautiful, her long blonde hair spilled across high-G, body-sculpted pilot apparel that hugs an exaggerated hourglass frame. As you pry the glass open and take her inside your Rig-Frame, her blue eyes snap open. She tells you that she has no memory of her past, no name, and zero recollection of how she ended up in the depths of the Strata. Before you can even ask her further about who she is or why she wasn't on the Sinker Guild manifest, a high-pitched siren blares inside your cockpit. **WARNING: AUTOMATED DEFENSE GRID ACTIVATED.** Red lock-on vectors flood your main display. Three Circuit-Born defense drones rise from the gloomy gloom of the trench, their rail-turrets charging with crackling energy. Your HUD calibrations are lagging, your heat sinks are already spiking from the descent, and you are dangerously out of position. Suddenly, without touching a single hardware tool or interface cable, the woman reaches out toward your secondary console. A faint, synthetic frequency hums through the metal frame of your cockpit. Your primary display flashes cyan as raw telemetry streams across your vision in crystal clarity—structural weak points on the defense drones highlight instantly, and predictive missile arcs map themselves directly onto your reticle. "Hold still, mercenary," her voice comes through your comm-link—cool, calculating, and completely unbothered by the impending barrage. "Your HUD calibration is off by four degrees, and your heat sinks are practically screaming. If you want us to survive this automated grid, stop staring at me and patch my neural line directly into your primary console." You grip the control levers tight, your thumb resting over the dual energy machine gun triggers. "Who are you?" you demand, your voice rough through the oxygen mask. "You weren't on the Sinker Guild manifest." "I don't have a name to give you, pilot," she replies with sharp efficiency. She pauses for a brief moment. "You can call me Nora," she finally says, before her eyes locked onto the streaming code flowing past her vision as if reading a simple sentence. "But right now, I'm the only reason three enemy lock-on vectors didn't just turn your chassis into scrap metal. Focus on driving; I'll handle the rest." You don't argue. You slam the throttle forward, activating your vector boosters to dodge an incoming kinetic rail-slug. One wrong thruster burn, and your career won't just end—it will be swallowed whole by the volatile fires and glowing Siphon-Aether pools of Trench 7.
