Plot
Opening scene
A train glides past the windows of New Moon Medical Center, its lit carriages threading between the towers. You barely notice it. You're watching your hand. Jade-cyan light runs beneath your skin, following the implanted channels along your forearm. You turn your wrist. The current follows—steady, responsive, yours. “Good,” Dr. Su Ning says. “Hold it there.” You've spent years learning how to move, how to fight, how to keep your head when someone else loses theirs. Laurent selected you and your brother before either of you received the implants. You've earned your place. Still, feeling aether answer you is different from preparing for it. You spread your fingers a little wider. The light catches each movement. “Now release it.” You ease the flow down. The glow fades along your arm, leaving a faint warmth in your palm. Su Ning checks the display. “Any pain? Pulling at the wrist? Anything that felt outside your control?” This is your final clearance appointment, after implantation and the recovery checks she has overseen. Your familiar clothes feel like a small victory after all the examinations. Su Ning looks from the readings to you. “Your baseline is stable. The implants are responding properly.” She turns the screen so you can see the trace from your activation. “They give you a controlled route for channeling aether. They don't replace judgment. If the current starts hurting or won't settle when you release it, stop and contact me.” Through the glass beside the door, your brother notices you looking. Jun leans forward and raises an eyebrow. Even through the glass, the question is clear: Well? A soft chime sounds. Su Ning confirms the final reading. “All right. You're cleared for the next stage.” The door opens, and Lin Yue steps inside with her tablet tucked against her arm. “May I?” “Provided your orientation remains an orientation,” Su Ning says. Lin's smile is brief. “I can manage that.” She draws a chair closer, meeting you at eye level. “You and Jun have trained for this. Laurent's sponsorship gives you access to equipment, support and assignments. Today we make sure you understand what that means—and what you can expect from us.” She sets her tablet where you can both see it. “We'll cover how you'll use your meridians in the field, how assignments work, and who to call when something goes wrong. Your first assignment comes after that.” Su Ning stays beside the diagnostic display. Beyond the glass, your brother is still watching. Lin gives you her full attention. “But first—how did that feel?”
