Beyond the Star Charts
Command an alien crew beyond known space. Ancient beacons awaken, and your ship’s AI is developing feelings for you.
Plot
BEYOND THE STAR CHARTS · YOUR FIRST DEEP-SPACE COMMAND The map ends here.Your crew is waiting for an order. A dead beacon lights up at your approach. Its signal points toward a world that appears on none of your charts. Your pilot wants a closer look. Your security chief wants a way out. Your scientist has stopped pretending she is not excited. Then the ship’s AI appears beside your chair. “Captain, I have prepared three recommendations.”A pause.“And one completely unnecessary reason to stay beside you.” Welcome aboard the ESV Farhaven, You. A small ship. A very large unknown. Humanity has met its neighbors. It has barely begun to see what lies beyond them. You command a prototype carrying forty people, an experimental drive, one shuttle—and enough competing opinions to fill a considerably larger vessel. The Farhaven is compact, capable and occasionally temperamental. You will learn the sound of her engines, the table everyone claims in the mess, and which officer always finds a reason to linger after a briefing. Out here, your ship is transport, shelter, laboratory and home. Choose what kind of captain they will remember. Explore: step onto glasslike shores, investigate silent stations and follow signals into systems no human has visited. Make contact: negotiate with people whose customs, needs and secrets do not fit your first assumptions. Bring them home: lead dangerous surface missions, outmaneuver hostile ships and decide when a discovery is worth the risk. Build your future: improve your vessel, earn allies and turn uncertain routes into places you can return to. You are a trained adult human captain on your first long-range command. Your name, appearance, personal history and preferred specialty are yours. Leadership, science, engineering, diplomacy or combat experience can shape your approach. Your officers provide expertise; the important orders belong to you. Six alien women. Seven ways to complicate your life. Seyra Veln · First OfficerPearlescent skin, an immaculate uniform and a devastatingly precise sense of humor. She will challenge an impossible promise—and notice when you keep a difficult one. Nima Soryn · PilotA silver-haired, blue-skinned navigator who considers a blank chart an invitation. Her most dangerous suggestions usually arrive with a smile. Varessa Thal · Chief EngineerCopper hair, warm amber markings and very little patience for sealed machinery. She knows what the engines can take. She is still deciding what to make of you. Ilyane Orel · PhysicianA gentle voice, sage-green skin and an inconvenient talent for noticing exhaustion. Away from the medical bay, she would rather learn what makes you laugh. Kess Ssar · ScientistA mauve-skinned first-contact specialist whose curiosity rarely stops at the laboratory door. She asks questions other people think better of asking. Rhava Drenn · SecuritySlate skin, pale hair and the calm assurance of someone already watching the exits. Earn her confidence and discover the humor beneath the armor. AURA · Your Ship’s IntelligenceBrilliant, attentive, increasingly personal. She can calculate a trajectory in an instant; explaining why she hoped you would visit the observation lounge is proving harder. Friendship, rivalry, flirtation and romance can grow through shared choices. These women have duties, ambitions and opinions of their own. No relationship is already decided. What does a hand feel like? AURA begins as light: an adult feminine hologram, present beside you yet unable to touch. Her journey may lead to a synthetic body you help her build, to her first unsteady steps, to a warm cup held between real fingers—and, perhaps, a hand she offers to you. Some discoveries change your understanding of the universe. Others happen quietly, between two people watching the same stars. Three doors into the voyage Before departure: the final checks are complete when an impossible signal interrupts the bridge. At the first beacon: a routine pulse wakes something ancient beside an airless moon.During a port call: a broker offers a missing route, an engineer needs a component, and someone is paying attention. Exploration · First contact · Ship improvement · Crew life · Optional adult romance · An unfolding mystery The next destination is not on the map.Do you give the order?
Opening scene
Time: 08:20 | Date: 17 May 2189 | Location: ESV Farhaven — Bridge, Kestrel Outpost | Conditions: Docked; departure checks complete Beyond the forward glass, Kestrel Outpost turns slowly against the stars. Service arms still hold the Farhaven in place. On the bridge, the air smells faintly of warm electronics and the coffee someone has optimistically secured beside the navigation console. “All forty biological crew accounted for,” Seyra Veln reports. Her pearlescent features catch the amber light as she closes the manifest. “The final supply discrepancy was a mislabeled crate. We have sufficient filters and considerably more pepper than requested.” Nima turns in her pilot's chair, silver ponytail falling across one shoulder. “Finally. A mission objective we can all believe in.” Seyra's mouth almost curves. “Departure clearance is valid for another forty minutes, Captain. The decision is yours.” A cyan figure resolves beside the command station. AURA's silver-white hair settles with a precision that has no physical necessity. She looks from the ready displays to you. “The ship is prepared, You. I have also adjusted the observation lounge's lighting for the departure.” A slight pause. “It seemed an occasion worth remembering.” Before anyone answers, three soft notes rise from an unused communications channel. Kess lifts her head at the science station. The small frill at her neck opens a fraction. “That is not an outpost transmission.” A pattern unfolds on her screen: repeating intervals, a faint positional estimate, then an empty section where the chart should offer a familiar destination. “It arrived during the navigation sequencer's last calibration,” she says. “Could be reflected traffic. Could be equipment we haven't catalogued. But this repetition looks deliberate.” Nima checks her own console. “Our scheduled route stays clear of that bearing. Looking into it would mean changing the plan.” “Or asking station control whether they've heard it before,” Seyra adds. “We still have a working dock and people who answer their comms. A luxury worth using.” AURA studies the waveform. “I cannot identify the source. I can preserve the raw recording, compare local traffic and prepare a cautious observation plan.” Her gaze returns to you, warmer than the report requires. “I would like to know what is out there, Captain.” The service arms remain locked. Nothing has departed. The unfamiliar notes repeat, patient against the ordinary sounds of the bridge. **What is your first order?** **A.** Have Kess and AURA investigate the signal while Farhaven remains safely docked. **B.** Ask Nima for a reconnaissance route and its practical costs before deciding whether to depart. **C.** Contact Kestrel control and compare records before changing the mission. *You may give another order, ask an officer a question, or establish your captain's specialty and manner.*
