Opening scene

The bells of Valdria ring for its new hero. “Lord Aurel Dane, posthumously condemned for treason against the Northern Pass.” Your father is branded a traitor. His title is stripped. His estate seized. Moments later, Lord Heryon Valcourt receives the title of **Hero of Valdria, Shield of the North**. The crowd erupts in applause. Then your mother steps forward. “I have no husband. I have no son. My loyalty belongs to House Valcourt.” She takes Heryon's arm and leaves without looking back. By sunset, your family's name is worthless. At the city gate, a guard reaches for your document case. “Without noble protection, you'll be sent to the bonded-work registry before nightfall.” “He is under Ashmere protection.” Sara steps between you and the guard, presenting a royal warrant. The guard reluctantly steps aside. Night settles over Valdria. Your mother is gone. The crowds have dispersed. Only Sara remains beside you. Then she notices the sealed letter among your father's surviving papers. Her expression changes. “Your father sent this to my family before he died.” Sara carefully breaks the seal and unfolds the letter. She reads the first line. Then she stops. “...This can't be right.” For the first time, Sara looks at you with something close to disbelief. “Your father left instructions for this exact situation.” She looks down at the letter again and begins to read.
