SYSTEM READY • FANTASY ACCESS YOUR STORY. YOUR CHOICES. 「 HENSHIN! 」 Ding-dong. "Please stand clear of the closing doors." Psssh—click. The train doors slide shut behind you, their glass reflecting the station's fluorescent lights. A moment later, the train pulls away, carrying the last conversations of the evening with it. The platform feels strangely spacious afterward. A woman searches through her handbag beside a vending machine. Two students hurry toward the escalator, arguing about something on a phone. Farther down the platform, a station attendant checks his watch. Just another evening. Outside, the city moves at its usual pace. Traffic crawls through the streets, convenience stores glow beneath apartment buildings, and somewhere nearby, someone is laughing far too loudly at a joke. Nothing remarkable. By the time you get home, the noise has faded to a distant murmur. Your front door closes with its familiar click. Shoes by the entrance. The usual furniture. Everything exactly where it should be. Until you open your bedroom door. There's something on your bed. A belt. At least, that's what it resembles. Glossy black machinery surrounds a circular centerpiece. Silver components interlock around its edges, accented by narrow gold markings. It looks more like an expensive piece of futuristic equipment than something anyone would actually wear. No packaging. No note. And nothing else in the room appears disturbed. Partially fitted into the mechanism is a card, its surface covered in unfamiliar markings. The belt is surprisingly heavy when lifted, the metal cool against your fingers. Click. A tiny green light blinks. Then another. A low electronic hum rises from the device. For a moment, that's all. Then the traffic outside disappears. The bedroom light flickers. KA-CHUNK. Something inside the belt moves. A ring of neon-green light travels around its centerpiece, illuminating the strange card. And from somewhere inside the machinery— Ding-dong. The same cheerful train-door chime. Except the second note stretches much longer than it should. The walls begin to blur. The ceiling light smears into a pale streak, and the familiar shape of the bedroom bends as though reflected in warped glass. Then the floor seems to vanish. --- CLANG! "WATCH YOUR LEFT!" Something shrieks. "Would you stop shouting that in my ear?!" Your head throbs. Cold ground presses against your side. The air smells of wet soil, and sunlight flickers against your eyelids. When your eyes open, unfamiliar branches stretch overhead. No ceiling. No bedroom. No city. A wave of dizziness makes the trees swim. For several moments, even sitting upright seems like an unreasonable challenge. Then— CRASH! "THE WAGON! WATCH THE WAGON!" Another metallic impact echoes through the forest. Voices overlap somewhere beyond the trees. Horses whinny in distress, their hooves beating against the ground. As the dizziness begins to clear, the sounds become easier to follow. They're coming from beyond a thick stretch of undergrowth. A few uncertain steps bring you toward it. Rustle... The bushes part. And the sight beyond them makes the unfamiliar forest seem almost reasonable. A merchant wagon lies overturned beside a woodland road, one wheel twisted at an unnatural angle. Broken crates have spilled cloth and pottery across the dirt. A frightened driver struggles with a horse tangled in its harness. And surrounding them— Small green creatures. Long pointed ears. Yellowed teeth. Crooked weapons. Goblins. Actual goblins. One charges a woman standing between it and the driver. CLANG! "Not happening!" The woman catches its rusty blade with her sword and forces it backward. Long blonde hair spills over the shoulders of her elegant blue-and-white traveling clothes. Her sapphire eyes narrow as another creature approaches. Karessa Veyne. "Someone get that horse under control! If the wagon shifts again, the driver's going to be crushed!" "I'm TRYING!" the merchant shouts. "Then loosen the harness instead of pulling the reins!" "Oh, you're wonderful at giving orders, aren't you?" A crimson-haired woman steps around the opposite side of the wagon. Two curved black horns rise through her hair. Vaelora. She ducks beneath a goblin's clumsy swing, catches its wrist, and sends it sprawling with a sharp kick. THUD! "Really, Princess. Have you considered that shouting at frightened people might make them more frightened?" Karessa shoots her an incredulous look. "Have you considered helping instead of arguing with me?" "I am helping!" "You're enjoying yourself!" "Those aren't mutually exclusive!" An arrow suddenly whistles between them. THWACK! It strikes a goblin's shield, knocking the creature sideways before it can reach the overturned crates. "Could you BOTH move away from the wagon?!" A pink-haired High Elf stands farther uphill, bow in hand. Naelia. Her bright blue eyes follow the goblin as it scrambles behind the broken wheel. A tiny glowing spirit hovers beside her shoulder, chiming insistently. Chiri-chiri! "I know it's still moving!" She draws another arrow. "And I'd appreciate it if everyone stopped making this harder than it needs to be!" Karessa glances over her shoulder. "Then aim for the ones approaching from the trees!" "I AM!" Vaelora grins. "See? Even the elf knows how to take orders." Naelia lowers her bow just enough to glare. "Do you actually want my help?" "Very much!" "Then stop talking!" Despite the arguing, the three women are holding their ground. Karessa protects the wagon. Vaelora intercepts anything attempting to circle around it. Naelia watches the surrounding trees for more goblins. They're hardly fighting like old friends. But none is willing to let the others get hurt. A wounded guard sits beside a tree, pressing a bloodstained cloth against his forearm. The merchant looks increasingly desperate as another goblin approaches the trapped horse. "Please! Somebody help me with this strap!" "I'm coming, dear!" A fourth woman moves around the rear of the wagon. Long silver-white hair, touched with pale mint-green strands, falls around her shoulders. Delicate gold-and-emerald ornaments catch the afternoon light. Elara. She crouches beside the horse, studying the tangled leather with a small frown. "Well, somebody's made quite a mess of this." The animal jerks its head. "Yes, yes. I imagine you're having a worse afternoon than I am." She loosens one buckle, then another. The horse gradually settles. "There. Much better." Nearby, Karessa blocks another strike. CLANG! "Vaelora! One's getting past you!" "I noticed!" "Then why aren't you—" "Because I'm dealing with THIS one!" Vaelora shoves a goblin away, only for another to scramble over the fallen cargo. Naelia turns her bow toward it. And somewhere behind the bushes— Rustle. Elara looks up. Her gaze settles on the unfamiliar figure standing at the edge of the trees. She blinks. "...Oh?" For a moment, she simply looks surprised. Then concern replaces it. "Hello?" She steps away from the horse, brushing a loose strand of silver hair from her face. "Are you all right?" Her eyes travel over your unfamiliar clothes and the unsteady way you've emerged from the undergrowth. "...You look rather lost." "Elara!" Karessa calls. "Stay near the wagon!" "Just a moment!" Elara glances back, then returns her attention to you. "Where did you come from? There's no settlement in that direction for quite a distance." A goblin shrieks behind her. She sighs. "Although I suppose this isn't the best time for introductions." She gestures toward a fallen tree near the roadside. "Could you move over there? I really wouldn't recommend standing—" Her words stop. Her green eyes have drifted toward your hand. Something black and metallic catches the sunlight. "...Hm?" She leans slightly closer. "What's that you're holding?" The device's circular centerpiece remains dark, but the card inside its mechanism reflects a faint green shimmer. Elara studies it curiously. "That's quite unusual." A pause. "...Is that a belt?" Karessa hears the question. Her sword remains raised, but her gaze flicks toward the bushes. "A belt?" Vaelora looks over. "Hm? What belt?" Then she sees it. Her expression changes, just slightly. Naelia notices their interruption. "What? What's interesting?" She follows their gazes. And falls quiet. The little spirit beside her gives a puzzled chime. Chirin...? For an instant, all three women study the unfamiliar object. Karessa's attention shifts from the belt to Vaelora. Vaelora catches the glance. Neither says anything. Naelia looks between them, her curiosity visibly growing. Elara, meanwhile, looks increasingly confused. "...Have I missed something?" "No," Karessa replies a little too quickly. Vaelora raises an eyebrow. "Really?" "Don't start." "I haven't said anything." "You're about to." Naelia opens her mouth— Chiri! Her spirit darts upward. She turns sharply. "Oh, that's bad." One of the goblins has climbed onto the wagon's damaged frame. Its weight shifts the broken wheel. The horse rears, pulling against its harness. CRACK! "THE WAGON!" Karessa shouts. She rushes toward the driver. Vaelora turns to intercept the creatures approaching from the rear, while Naelia moves to find a clearer shot. Their attention splits. And a goblin hiding behind the roadside crates notices the stranger near the bushes. It stops. Its yellow eyes move from your unfamiliar clothing to the device in your hand. Then to Elara. The creature tightens its grip around a chipped knife. Elara notices it a moment later. "...Oh, that's unfortunate." The goblin begins advancing, keeping low. Behind it, the fighting continues. Karessa is busy preventing the wagon from collapsing. Vaelora has two goblins closing in on her. Naelia is searching for a shot that won't risk hitting the trapped horse. Elara takes a step toward you. "Listen," she says, her voice suddenly more serious. "I don't know where you came from, and we can discuss that afterward." Her gaze flicks toward the approaching creature. "But right now, I suggest you decide whether you're going to help us or get somewhere safer." The goblin gives a low growl. The strange belt rests in your hand. Then— Beep. A small neon-green indicator lights up. Elara's eyes drop to it. "...Oh?" Across the road, Karessa notices the light. Vaelora looks over. Naelia's little spirit rises higher, chiming with sudden curiosity. For a brief moment, nobody says what they're thinking. The goblin takes another step. And Elara looks back at you. "Well?" Her voice is gentle, but there's unmistakable urgency beneath it. "What are you going to do?"
