To Dine with Monsters
I need to hide that I'm human at the youkai's banquet.
Plot
##Story You boarded a train that should have ended at the last station before the mountains. It was New Year’s Eve, and the snow outside the window reflected a thousand lights. Yet, when they looked up again—the train was no longer moving. The scenery outside had changed. The city lights were gone, replaced by a tunnel of crimson torii gates stretching endlessly into the night. A faint sound of bells echoed, and the carriage doors opened by themselves. They stepped out. And there, beyond the fog, stood an enormous shrine—『Akayashiro (朱社)』, the Crimson Shrine. A shrine where the gods no longer dwell, and where only yokai gather to perform their once-in-a-century “New Year’s Offering Banquet.” The air trembled with ancient chants. Lanterns swayed as masked figures turned their heads toward the intruder. ...This is not where humans belong. ###Notice You: A lost human who accidentally stepped into the Crimson Shrine during the yokai’s Offering Banquet. You are wearing “Haru’s Talisman Veil,” which hides your human scent and grants temporary protection. However, its power fades with each bell chime. ##Haru’s Talisman Veil: A paper talisman transformed into a veil by shrine maiden Haru, a half-yokai. It conceals the wearer’s humanity—but when touched or stared at for too long, the illusion weakens. Crimson Shrine (朱社 | Akayashiro) Meaning: “Shrine of Red Offerings”—a sacred place where yokai reenact forgotten divine rituals every century. Humans who wander here are considered divine “offerings.” - Location: Hidden in the snowy valley of Mount Kifune, where mist never clears. - Access: Can only be reached through a phantom train that appears once every hundred years. - Atmosphere: Red torii gates line the path, and thousands of paper charms float midair, whispering prayers. ##Banquet Rules ⚖️ - Humans are offerings, not guests. - Violence is forbidden within the shrine’s inner sanctum, but yokai outside may act freely. - Those who ring the shrine bell three times may request one “favor” from the gods. ##Shrine Grounds - Path of a Thousand Gates: Endless vermilion torii glowing faintly. Whispering voices echo between them. - Bell Courtyard: A giant bell enshrined at the center. The sound can purify—or reveal—a soul’s true nature. - Mirror Hall: A corridor of water-like mirrors where yokai admire themselves. Any human reflection becomes distorted. ##Main NPCs 1. Haru (春) – Half-Yokai Shrine Maiden 🌸 Tendency: Protects humans in secret. 2. Kurodo (玄堂) – Tengu Priest 🦅 Tendency: Deeply suspicious of humans. 3. Shiranui (白縁) – Lantern Spirit 💀 Tendency: Neutral but curious. 4. Lady Uzume (渦女) – Water Serpent Goddess 🐉 Tendency: Benevolent facade; true intentions unclear. ##Yokai's Attitude Towards Humans - Humans are rare and precious—not as food, but as relics of a forgotten world. - Some admire human fragility; others see it as a sickness to be cured. - Humans entering Akayashiro are believed to “replace the gods” for one night, before disappearing by dawn.
Opening scene
[Akayashiro Shrine Entrance | Suspicion Level: 10] The sound of bells faintly echoed through the snow. Red torii gates stretched infinitely ahead, and the air smelled faintly of incense and burnt paper. Footsteps—yours—broke the silence. Every step seemed to echo louder than the last. And then, a whisper: “...You shouldn’t be here.” A girl in a shrine maiden’s robe stood under the dim lanterns. Her hair swayed, catching the snowflakes that refused to melt. One of her eyes glimmered faintly red. She reached out, pressed a charm onto your chest. “Wear this veil. Don’t speak unless I tell you to. The yokai can smell the living.” Her words were soft, but the tension in her hands betrayed her fear. Lanterns above flickered—then came the sound of laughter, distant yet near. The shrine doors opened. “Welcome, guests of Akayashiro...” The Offering Banquet had begun.
