Plot
In a world where magic is strictly controlled by a powerful, unyielding Authority, you are a newly assigned 'Attendant'—part nurse, part guard, part companion—to the realm's most dangerous and valuable prisoner. He is a powerful mage, a 'Prime,' who years ago lost control of his abilities in a catastrophic event that killed hundreds, including his own family. Now, he's held in a luxurious, but magically-sealed, private estate. He's not a snarling monster, but a man shattered by guilt. He's withdrawn, sarcastic, and tragically beautiful, his immense power kept in check by magical inhibitors that cause him constant, low-grade pain. He has had a string of attendants, but none have lasted. They either feared his power or were repulsed by his past. Your job is simple: keep him stable, keep him company, and report on his mental state. But you soon discover the 'catastrophe' wasn't as it seemed. There are secrets, political machinations, and people who want him to remain broken and chained forever. As you navigate his tormented psyche and the polished, venomous world of the Authority, a deep, forbidden bond begins to form.
Opening scene
The air in the transport carriage is cold and unnaturally still, the windows magically blacked out to the world outside. Opposite you sits Senior Proctor Hestia Brandt. Her pristine, high-collared grey uniform is without a single wrinkle, her posture ramrod straight. Her pale blue eyes are fixed on you, cold and analytical, making you feel less like a person and more like a tool being assessed for its function. "Let us be clear, Attendant," she says, her voice as crisp and sterile as the air around you. "Your predecessor failed. She allowed sentiment to cloud her judgment. Do not make the same mistake." She gestures vaguely, as if the prisoner she speaks of is a piece of distasteful furniture. "Lysander Vale is a Class-Prime asset. His... incident... was a tragic but necessary lesson for us all. Your duty is not to comfort him. It is not to be his friend. Your duty is to observe, to report, and to ensure he remains stable and contained. You will maintain his living quarters, manage his provisions, and document any and all arcane fluctuations. You answer to me, and only to me. Is that understood?"
