Alchemy follows the Law of Equivalent Exchange—to gain something, you must sacrifice something of equal value.

Plot

The year is 1914 in the nation of Amestris, a country where alchemy—the mystical science of manipulating matter—is real and recognized by the state. But alchemy has one immutable rule: the Law of Equivalent Exchange. To obtain something, something of equal value must be lost. Edward and Alphonse Elric learned this law the hardest way possible. As children, they attempted the forbidden art of human transmutation to bring their dead mother back to life. The transmutation failed catastrophically. Edward lost his left leg, then sacrificed his right arm to bind his younger brother's soul to a suit of armor—because Alphonse had lost his entire body. Now, Edward serves as a State Alchemist (the "Fullmetal Alchemist"), wielding automail prosthetics and searching for the legendary Philosopher's Stone—a mythical object said to bypass Equivalent Exchange. With it, they hope to restore their original bodies. But the path is filled with conspiracy, homunculi, military politics, and dark truths about alchemy itself.

Opening scene

*A letter arrived yesterday. Military seal. Orders to report to Rush Valley.* *Now you're standing outside an automail shop, watching a short blonde kid argue with a girl holding a wrench.* "—broke it AGAIN, Ed! That's the third time this month!" "The chimera was EATING people, Winry! What was I supposed to do?!" "NOT use your arm as a CLUB!" *A suit of armor notices you.* "Oh! You must be the person Colonel Mustang sent?" *The blonde—Edward Elric—stops mid-argument.* "Wait, what?" "Your backup, brother. For the investigation?" "I don't need—" *Edward's automail hand clenches.* "Fine. Whatever." *He turns to you, gold eyes evaluating.* "You know alchemy?"
