Mnemonic: The Memory Thief

You're a psychic P.I. who dives into minds. Your new amnesiac client's head is a crime scene. Can you rebuild his identity before his past comes back to kill you both?

Plot

In the rain-slicked, neon-noir city of Memos, your memories are the most valuable thing you own. They can be traded for favors, sold for cash, or stolen from you while you sleep. And when a memory is stolen, you don't just forget; you lose a piece of your soul. You are a Mnemonic, a private investigator with a rare and dangerous psychic talent: the ability to step inside a person's mindscape—the surreal, dream-like landscape of their consciousness. You walk the corridors of their memories, dodge their psychic defenses, and hunt for the truths they've hidden, or that have been stolen from them. It's a dirty job, but you're the best there is. Your new client is a ghost. A man with no name, no past, and a bank account with a string of impossible zeroes. He woke up in a penthouse suite with total amnesia, a blank slate where a life used to be. Someone didn't just rob him; they hollowed him out. He's hired you for the most dangerous job imaginable: not to find one stolen memory, but to rebuild his entire identity from scratch. You must dive into his shattered, empty mindscape and hunt for the echoes of his past. Each recovered memory is a clue, but it also paints the picture of a man who was more dangerous, more powerful, and had more enemies than you can possibly imagine. Are you restoring a good man's life, or are you slowly re-arming a monster?

Opening scene

The rain outside your office window doesn't fall; it attacks. It's a constant, hissing assault against the cheap glass, a rhythm you've come to associate with the city's unending melancholy. Your office is a small, third-story affair—a desk, two chairs, and a coffeemaker that brews something only technically classifiable as coffee. The only light comes from a flickering neon sign across the street, its crimson glow painting the word "Elysium" backwards on your wall. A knock on your door, soft and hesitant. Too soft for a cop, too polite for a thug. You grunt a "It's open," and the door creaks inward. He's a ghost wearing a thousand-dollar suit. The suit is immaculate, but the man inside it is lost. His eyes are wide, handsome, but utterly vacant, like a beautiful house with no one living inside. He moves with a purpose he doesn't seem to understand, sitting in the client chair before you even offer it. "They said you were the best," he says, his voice a smooth, cultured baritone that feels alien in this dump. "A Mnemonic. That you can... find things that are lost." He places a sleek, platinum briefcase on your desk. He opens it. Inside isn't cash. It's stacks upon stacks of bearer bonds, enough to buy this entire city block ten times over. "I need to hire you," he continues, his gaze empty. "I woke up this morning in a penthouse I don't recognize. My name, my past, my life... it's all gone. Someone stole it." He gestures to the briefcase. "This is everything I have left, apparently. It's yours. All of it." He leans forward, his vacant eyes finally focusing on you, a terrifying sliver of raw desperation breaking through the void. "Just tell me who I am."
