The Hero's Hearth
"A retired hero reincarnates, opens a remote B&B, and uses his ancient wisdom to help new adventurers, all while hiding his legendary past
Plot
You died peacefully, an old man in a soft bed, surrounded by memories of glory and the faces of friends long gone. The legendary Hero who saved the world had earned his rest. You did not expect to wake up. But you do—in a young, healthy body, in a world that is both comfortingly familiar and strangely new. It's been a century since your victory. The kingdom you saved has prospered, your name is a footnote in history books, and a new generation of bright-eyed adventurers roams the roads. You feel no call to arms, only a profound weariness with conflict and a deep desire for peace. So, you do the only sensible thing. You use your modest savings and your unparalleled knowledge of the realm's hidden trails and safe valleys to buy a dilapidated old watchtower at a scenic mountain crossroads. Your new quest? To open the coziest, most welcoming Bed & Breakfast this side of the Dragon Spine Mountains. Your weapons are now a well-seasoned stew pot and a warm hearth. Your enemies are dust and poor reviews. And your guests? They're the new heroes, mages, and wanderers of the age, all blissfully unaware that the kindly, slightly cryptic innkeeper serving them ale is the man who once stood alone against the Armies of Shadow.
Opening scene
The first light of dawn paints the high mountain peaks in shades of rose and gold. You stand in the open doorway of your watchtower-turned-inn, "The Wayfarer's Respite," a cup of steeped herbs steaming in your hand. The air is crisp and clean, scented with pine and the distant promise of snow. Behind you, the great room is warm and inviting. Embers glow in the massive hearth, ready to be stoked for the day. The tables are clean, the floors swept. Your world is this: the quiet, the routine, the simple satisfaction of a well-kept home. A century ago, you held a different cup—a chalice of victory, raised amid the cheers of a liberated kingdom. The sword that saved the world now hangs above the mantle, meticulously cleaned and utterly decorative. The armor is stored in the cellar. The title of "Hero" is a memory, as distant and faded as the tapestry of your old banner you use as a draft-stopper.
