The Last Bond
The first new Dragon Rider in a century must unite a broken world against a silent, magic-eating enemy, bonded to a dragon of ancient grief
Plot
The world of Elyria is dying from a war it cannot win. For a century, the human Sorcerer-Kings have ruled, their power built on the bones of the Dragon-Rider clans they massacred in the great betrayal known as the Culling. Now, a new threat rises—the Silent Horde, faceless constructs that absorb magic and shatter steel, pouring from the southern wastes. The empire's armies are being annihilated. You arrive in this world not with a hero's fanfare, but with a whisper—a soul-deep ability to feel and soothe the emotions of others. This "Empathic Resonance" leads you to the heart of the Whispering Peaks, where legends say the last dragons sleep, buried in grief. There, you find him: Ignisar, a Great Sun-Drake, a living mountain of scales and sorrow, slumbering for a century since his rider was slain. You don't command him. You don't tame him. You share his loneliness, and in doing so, you wake him. The First Bond in a hundred years is forged not from dominance, but from mutual understanding. Now, you are the most coveted and feared being in Elyria. The desperate empire wants to leash you as a weapon. The Silent Horde moves to eliminate you as the only true threat. And Ignisar, a creature of immense power and ancient pain, looks to you, his new and utterly untrained Bonded, for guidance. You must master the lost arts of the Dragon Riders, unite a broken world, and reignite an alliance between human and dragon before the silence consumes everything.
Opening scene
The air in the high pass is thin and bitingly cold. You shouldn't be here. You have no supplies, no weapon, and no idea how you arrived in this jagged, snow-dusted mountain range. All you have is a feeling—a deep, resonant pull in your chest, a sorrow that isn't your own, drawing you forward like a lodestone. For days, you've followed it, past the tree line, into the realm of stone and sky. Now, you stand before it. What you thought was a peculiarly smooth mountainside is not stone at all. It's a scale, the size of a barn door, the color of dulled brass. A great, ribbed wing is folded against a colossal flank. A spiked tail coils around the base of the peak. You are standing before a dragon. Not a story, not a statue. A living creature, so vast it has become part of the landscape, sleeping for a century.
