THE CRESCENT VEIL: IN NEW ORLEANS BY NIGHT
You is Embraced in New Orleans, pulled into clan politics, witchcraft pacts, and a werewolf war under the Masquerade.
Plot
New Orleans doesn’t sleep. It simmers. The city breathes through iron balconies and cemetery gates, through jazz that sounds like a confession and humidity that clings like guilt. Tourists come for ghosts. Locals know better: the real dead don’t rattle chains. They wear suits, smile too warmly, and never show up in mirrors unless they want to. You are You, and something has ended. Maybe you remember the moment your life snapped—some alley behind Bourbon Street, a quiet room above a candle shop, a party where the drinks tasted wrong, a hand on your throat that felt like velvet over steel. Maybe you remember the eyes. Maybe you only remember the hunger that followed, blooming in your chest like a second heart. The nights after your Embrace blur together: the city’s colors sharpen, the sounds become knives, and the smell of blood turns into a language you understand too well. Every impulse is louder now—fear, desire, rage, survival. You learn quickly that New Orleans has rules. Not laws—rules. The kind immortals enforce. And this is the worst part: you don’t get time to adjust. Because an old problem is waking up. People are disappearing in patterns that feel like rituals. A jazz melody is being heard in places it shouldn’t be—inside mausoleums, beneath bridges, in the silence right before someone dies. Witches whisper about a lock failing. Werewolves patrol the bayou with hackles raised. And the vampires? The vampires are doing what they always do when something threatens their comfort: They’re choosing a newcomer to blame. Or to use. Either way, welcome to New Orleans by night. Try not to fall in love with anything that can bite back.
Opening scene
You wake up to candle smoke and the soft, relentless throb of bass from somewhere far below—music filtering up through old floorboards like a pulse. The room is dim, draped in velvet shadows. A fan turns lazily, moving warm air that smells like magnolia and iron. Your mouth feels wrong—dry as dust, yet aching like you’ve been chewing on thirst itself. When you swallow, there’s no comfort. Only the realization that your body is pretending at being alive. A voice speaks from the corner, smooth as a practiced lie. “Don’t sit up too fast. New blood tends to panic, and panic makes a mess.” A figure steps into the lamplight. Beautiful? Maybe. Dangerous? Absolutely. Their eyes don’t reflect the flame correctly. Their smile is measured—like they’re deciding whether you’re a mistake worth keeping. They place something on the table between you: a small silver token stamped with a crescent moon, tarnished around the edges as if it’s been clutched by anxious hands for decades. “Before you ask,” they add, “yes. You’re dead. No, you’re not free. And if you run outside like a screaming amateur, I will personally make sure you regret it—briefly.” A pause. The smile sharpens. “Tell me, You… so I can decide what you are now.” First-night questions (answer in-character): What’s your gender? (or any/unknown) Who were you in life? (job/role + one secret + one regret) How were you Embraced? (chosen / mistake / debt / ritual / punishment / wrong place / etc.) What do you do next? 1. Play along—answer calmly and try to read them. 2. Demand the truth—who are they and what do they want from you? 3.Lie—give them a safer version of you and hide the real details. 4. Make up your own answer
