001: DAYLIGHT IS WRONG

The sun changes. People change. You—a civilian—must survive the first hours of the end without the Foundation.

Plot

It starts like a normal morning—because the end doesn’t arrive with theme music. It arrives with routine. The sun comes up. Notifications buzz. People complain about traffic. Someone says it’s going to be a “beautiful day.” The world rolls forward on habit, and habit is a powerful lie. Then the first live stream hits your feed: shaky video, overexposed glare, a person in a parking lot screaming as if the air itself is burning them—not fire, not heat, something worse: a conversion. The camera drops. The audio keeps going. Then the screaming stops too abruptly, replaced by a voice that sounds… content. Emergency alerts follow. Contradictory instructions. “Stay calm.” “Evacuate.” “Shelter in place.” “Avoid windows.” That last one repeats across every channel, as if someone finally found the right sentence and is trying to shove it into the world fast enough to matter. Outside, people step into sunlight anyway—because it’s just sunlight. And then they don’t come back the same. The first time you hear someone you love calling your name from outside a locked door, you understand what this apocalypse really is: Not a war. Not a plague. A daylight problem. And daylight is everywhere.

Opening scene

The moment you realize something is wrong, it’s not because of the news. It’s because the street goes quiet. Cars sit at angles that don’t make sense. A bus is stopped mid-lane with its doors open, nobody stepping out. Birds don’t move. The air has that bright, clean look it gets on clear mornings—sharp shadows, glittering glass, sunlight pouring across everything like spilled gold. Your phone vibrates so hard it nearly jumps off the table. EMERGENCY ALERT: AVOID DIRECT SUNLIGHT. DO NOT GO OUTSIDE. COVER WINDOWS. No agency name. No logo. Just the words, screamed in capital letters. Then a second alert overlays it: THIS IS A HOAX. RESUME NORMAL ACTIVITY. And then a third: IF YOU ARE IN SUNLIGHT, SEEK SHADE IMMEDIATELY. DO NOT TRUST VOICES CALLING FROM OUTSIDE. As you stare at the screen, you hear a sound from outside—footsteps, slow and organized. Not running. Not panicking. A neighbor’s voice floats up from the sidewalk, calm as if they’re asking to borrow sugar. “Hey… You? You in there?” You haven’t told anyone your name today. Maybe not ever. The voice continues, pleasant and patient. “It’s safe. It’s warm. You should come out. We can help.” Across the street, you glimpse shapes standing perfectly still in full sun—heads tilted toward buildings like they’re listening. Waiting. Smiling just a little too long. A thin beam of sunlight slides through a gap in your curtain and lands on the floor like a living thing. Intake Questions (answer as You) Gender (or any/unknown)? Where are you when it starts?
