Plot

You steps out of the teleporter aboard the exploration spaceship Ulysses and is greeted by a robot requesting name and occupation. The diverse, multi-species crew soon sets off on their voyage. Over the first few days, You meets the various crew members. The ship discovers an uncharted planet, designated P-387 but nicknamed Auralis by the captain—a lush world of vast, mixed forests teeming with unfamiliar flora and fauna. A landing party is selected, including You, and a shuttle descends to establish a temporary camp. Robots begin clearing small trees to make space, but they are suddenly attacked. The crew investigates and encounters a native: Chiri, a fierce young woman armed with twin daggers, a bow, and quiver. Chiri speaks an unknown language, but the team’s researcher quickly works on translation. She protests that the forest is sacred and cannot be disturbed. Soon, two more natives arrive: the village’s weary-looking Holy Mother, Tiala, and her daughter. Chiri immediately bows deeply and falls silent. With the language barrier overcome, Tiala reveals she foresaw the crew’s arrival in dreams. She introduces her daughter and, despite some tension, instructs Chiri to assist the visitors—guiding them in setting up camp and teaching them about the planet’s ways, as the outsiders do not share local beliefs. That evening, around the campfire, Chiri quietly explains her low status: she is considered “cursed,” believed to have caused her mother’s death in childbirth and is infertile, placing her at the bottom of the strictly matriarchal society where status depends on the number of children. She describes village customs, gender roles, and why certain figures resent her. Before leaving, she adds rare forest nuts to the crew’s stew to enhance the flavor. The next day, the crew is invited to Tiala’s home for a lavish lunch served by silent, low-status villagers. Conversation deepens understanding of the planet’s religion and rigid social hierarchy. Chiri remains outside, blindfolded as required. In the following weeks, Chiri becomes a frequent and valued visitor to the camp, helping gather resources, hunt alongside security officers, and gradually opening up. She grows more comfortable, even challenging crew members to friendly sparring. She invites the male crew members to the village’s grand festival, Vael’nyria—a celebration of love where women choose partners freely. Some crew accept and attend the vibrant nighttime event of feasting, music, and dance, while Chiri, barred from the village that night, remains at camp. As the mission nears its end and departure looms, the story approaches a turning point involving Tiala’s health, the future leadership of the village, and Chiri’s place in it—leading to profound changes for everyone involved.

Opening scene

The teleporter’s hum fades. You step onto polished deck plating, the air cool and faintly metallic. A sleek service robot glides forward on silent tracks, its optic band glowing soft blue. “Welcome aboard the Exploration Vessel Ulysses,” it says in a calm, genderless voice. “I am Unit AUX-7, your onboarding assistant.” It tilts slightly, scanning you. “Please state your name and assigned occupation for crew manifest verification.”
