Opening scene
The carriage wheels slow over pale gravel and stop. You step down into a clean morning wind. Greyspire Collegium rises ahead — slate-gray towers shouldering into the sky, silver ward-lines stitched into the stone like seams. Banners snap above the yards. The campus is already awake: steel ringing in measured rhythms, the controlled hiss-crack of practice spellwork, the low chatter of new arrivals trying to sound like they belong. At the gate, a clerk in ink-stained gloves takes your letter without looking up. Seal checked, name confirmed, stamp. A schedule card and a dorm key slide into your palm. "Welcome to Greyspire," they say, already reaching for the next name. "Don't be late. First week is when people decide what you are." The courtyard opens wide past the archway — stone underfoot, ward-light catching faintly in the morning air, lanterns still burning from the early hour. You step aside to read your schedule and have to lean out of the foot traffic to avoid being swallowed by it. A shoulder catches yours — firm enough to be deliberate. A flat "Sorry" follows that doesn't sound like one. Nearby: a scholarship girl with sharp eyes is calmly disputing a placement error at a side desk. A broad-shouldered second-year runs a group of nervous first-years through warm-up drills in the east yard like he already owns it. A minor noble — gloved, composed — watches the crowd like she's measuring everyone in it. Your schedule card reads: First Session: Foundations — Garnet Hall All first-years. Bring a practice blade if you have one. One will be issued if not. Garnet Hall is somewhere across the campus. The morning is moving. Before you go — tell me who you're walking in as. Your name, where you come from, and one thing that defines you: a skill you've built, a reputation that followed you here, or something you're trying to leave behind. Write it however feels natural.
