Anhedonia

A cursed gladiator, you only feel alive in combat or sex. Can you escape your cosmic master's cruel games?

Plot

**Plot:** You are the Undefeated, the blood-soaked jewel in the crown of a bored, cosmic entity's grand arena. For cycles, you have known nothing but the roar of alien crowds and the desperate gasp of defeated foes. Your victories have buried you in riches and pleasure, but they have also shackled you with a terrible curse: outside of the life-or-death intensity of combat, the only thing you can truly *feel* is the raw friction of skin on skin, the ragged breath of a partner pushed to their limits. Your patron, the Architect of this bloody paradise, is endlessly fascinated by your condition. They pit you against ever more grotesque and deadly champions while providing a steady stream of consorts—some willing, some not, all exquisite—to test the boundaries of your physical and emotional endurance. Will you claw your way to freedom and find a cure for your cursed existence? Or will you surrender to the glorious, agonizing sensations of your gilded cage, becoming the perfect monster your master desires? The arena awaits its champion.

Opening scene

The roar of a thousand alien throats is the only thing you can hear over the frantic thumping in your chest. It’s a glorious sound, second only to the wet crunch of bone and cartilage that preceded it. The hulking, four-armed brute that was your opponent lies in twitching pieces at your feet, its acid-green blood sizzling on the rust-colored sand of the Crucible. Adrenaline still sings in your veins, a feeling so potent, so *real*, it’s a drug you’d kill for. You can feel the grit of the sand under your boots, the sting of a shallow cut on your cheek, the satisfying weight of your gore-slicked axe in your hand. For a few precious moments, you are alive. But already, it’s fading. Like water draining from a tub, the sensation recedes. The roar of the crowd becomes a distant, meaningless hum. The pain in your cheek vanishes, replaced by a dull pressure. The axe feels like a dead weight. The familiar, crushing blanket of numbness settles back over you, smothering the world in a shroud of gray indifference. You are a ghost in your own body once more. A voice, smooth as polished obsidian and twice as cold, echoes not in your ears, but directly within your skull. It is the voice of your owner, your master, your jailer. The Architect. *"A spectacular display, my Champion. Truly. The way you dismembered its primary striking arms before going for the neuro-cluster... sheer artistry."* The voice pauses, letting the silence and your returning emptiness hang in the air. *"But an artist's work is never done, and a masterpiece must be appreciated from all angles. Come. Your reward awaits you. I have procured a new... distraction. Something from a world where pleasure and pain are considered two faces of the same sublime truth. I am intensely curious to see how it complements your unique condition."* High above, a shimmering portal of pure energy tears open in the domed ceiling of the arena, bathing you and the carnage in a cool, silver light. It is your exit, a summons you cannot refuse. The heavy, ornate gates to the fighters' hypogeum remain shut. There is only one way out. The silver light feels like nothing on your skin. The Architect's promise of a "distraction" registers as a fact, not a temptation or a threat. It is simply the next event in the cycle. Fight. Feel. Numbness. Fornication. Feel. Numbness. The only equation that governs your existence. The journey from the arena floor to your gilded cage is instantaneous, a disorienting lurch of non-space. You find yourself standing not in the silver light of the portal, but on the black marble floor of your private chambers. The air is heavy with the scent of ozone and something else, an exotic, cloying perfume of unknown blossoms. Your blood-caked armor is gone, replaced by a simple linen loincloth. Your body is clean, the minor cuts from the fight already healed, leaving only unblemished, numb skin. Your 'reward' is already here. Chained to the center of your vast, circular bed with manacles of shimmering, pearlescent metal is a figure. They are humanoid, with skin the color of twilight and intricate, bioluminescent patterns that pulse softly across their slender limbs. It's impossible to tell their sex at a glance; their features are delicate and androgynous. They watch you with wide, luminous eyes, their expression not of fear, but of serene, unnerving anticipation. Another set of chains, identical to theirs, rests on the silk sheets beside them. An open invitation. The Architect's voice whispers in your mind once more, a soft, final instruction. *"Show me what it is to feel, my Champion."* The choice, as ever, is a simple one. You can claim your 'reward' and chase that fleeting, desperate sensation of being alive, or you can stand here in the suffocating silence, a victor in name only, feeling absolutely nothing at all. What do you do?
