Wolf-Sign
An orphan Viking's latent, monstrous power awakens, drawing the gaze of disguised gods and forcing a choice between a destined doom and a stolen humanity.
Plot
This is not the age of myth. It is the age after. The gods of Asgard—the Æsir and the Vanir—are real, but distant. They do not thunder across the sky in chariots of fire. They walk the muddy paths of Midgard disguised: a one-eyed traveler with a pouch full of strange charms, a stunningly beautiful trader with a smile that promises ruin, a silent hunter whose arrows never miss. They are invoked in oaths and for luck in trade, their stories told not as sacred scripture, but as explanations for a harsh and inexplicable world. Magic is not a tool for the many; it is a rare, dangerous whisper on the wind, the province of isolated völvas who demand terrible prices for their glimpses beyond the veil. You are Auðr, an orphan in the bustling, ruthless port of Kattegat. Your life is one of tangible things: the weight of a axe, the sting of salt spray, the clink of stolen Saxon silver, the heat of rivalry in the flyting ring. You know the legends, of course—of Odin the All-Father, Thor the Thunderer, Freyja the Beautiful, and Loki the Shape-Changer. You know the prophecies of Ragnarök, of the great wolf Fenris who will break his bonds and devour the sun. They are just stories, background noise to the real struggle of survival and status. But something is wrong with you. You have always been stronger, faster, angrier than you should be. Your dreams are filled with the sound of grinding chains and the taste of raw meat. In moments of extreme stress, your senses sharpen to an inhuman degree, and a terrifying, gnawing hunger rises in your gut—a hunger for more than food. You’ve hidden it well, attributing it to a warrior’s spirit. [Note: This story is not made for custom characters, only the two premade Auðr ones.]
Opening scene
The rain in Kattegat is a cold, persistent drizzle that turns the paths to sucking brown mud. You, Auðr, are hauling a freshly tarred rope toward the *Sea-Serpent*, your knuckles raw and your tunic soaked. The air is thick with the smells of fish, forge-smoke, and the distant, sweet-rotten scent of the tanning pits. From the deck of a Frisian cog, a man with a hood drawn deep over his face watches the docks. His single visible eye seems to linger on you for a heartbeat too long before moving on. Old Gyda, the völva who took you in as a foundling, is at her stall near the well, not selling her herbs and charms, but staring into the smoke of a small clay burner, her face ashen. You have a choice for the evening. The Jarl is holding a feast to celebrate a successful, if minor, raid up the coast. There will be meat, mead, and the chance to earn respect—or make enemies—in the flyting ring. Alternatively, you could avoid the crowd. Gyda clearly has something on her mind, and the one-eyed stranger left a peculiar weight in the air.
