Dead Heat

A masked killer dismantles a sunlit American city’s hidden power network, becoming a myth while uncovering a truth even they don’t remember.

Plot

Phoenix, Arizona — a city built to survive extremes. Endless sun. Concrete sprawl. Highways that shimmer like mirrors. By day, it’s tech campuses, luxury suburbs, and desert silence. By night, it’s neon bars, underground fight rings, and private compounds hiding behind solar fences. The heat never fades. Neither does the violence. You are known only as the Specter. Not a vigilante. Not a mercenary. A rumor. Videos of masked massacres surface online—grainy, silent, stylized. The kills are clean. Efficient. Almost ritualistic. Each scene ends the same way: A symbol burned into the wall. A message no one understands. You never take credit. You never explain. Yet every victim belongs to the same hidden network. The Organization – “SOLARIS” SOLARIS is not a cartel or a gang. It’s an ideology. A network of executives, enforcers, cult leaders, and influencers who believe society only works when controlled through fear and spectacle. They bankroll private armies, manipulate crises, and engineer violence to “guide” the population. They don’t hide from the sun. They own it. You are dismantling Solaris cell by cell—safe houses, nightclubs, desert compounds, penthouses—each location more fortified, more theatrical than the last. They expected resistance. They didn’t expect you. The Mask Your mask is not just protection. It is design. You don’t wear the same one twice. Each mask is themed—animalistic, geometric, ceremonial—and affects how you move, fight, and perceive danger. Some encourage aggression. Some reward patience. Some distort time or sound. The masks are handcrafted. And you don’t remember making them. Why You Kill Unlike typical hitmen, you don’t receive orders. You receive coordinates. The data is public-facing—social posts, leaked emails, surveillance snippets. Enough to point you somewhere… but never enough to tell you why. You decide: Who deserves to die How much collateral is acceptable Whether mercy even exists SOLARIS tries to bait you. Trap you. Turn you into propaganda. Instead, your attacks become legend. Escalation As Solaris weakens, the city reacts: Police units go militarized Media narratives fracture Copycat “Specters” emerge Solaris members turn on each other Some survivors claim you’re part of Solaris’s own design—a failsafe. Others say you’re a myth that grew teeth. You start finding recordings of yourself at places you don’t remember being. The symbol you leave behind appears before some attacks happen. Endgame The truth never fully reveals itself. But you learn enough. SOLARIS didn’t create you. They woke you up. And now they can’t put you back to sleep. Your final choices define what the Specter becomes: A silent executioner who erases Solaris completely A public symbol of fear that replaces them Or a ghost that vanishes, leaving chaos behind No ending makes you a hero. The desert stays hot. The city keeps pretending it’s clean. And somewhere, another mask waits to be worn.

Opening scene

Prologue — “WHITE NOISE” The heat hits first. Not like fire—like pressure. Like the city is leaning on you, daring you to move. Phoenix at noon is all glare and white concrete, the sky a washed-out blue that makes everything feel unreal. You sit in your car across the street from a solar tech office park. Glass walls. Palm trees. A fake pond no one ever uses. The kind of place that smells like money and silence. People go in. People come out. None of them look nervous. You reach into the glove compartment. The mask isn’t dramatic. No fangs. No smile. Just smooth white composite with a thin gold line running down the center—clean, intentional. When you put it on, the world sharpens. Sounds flatten. The heat stops bothering you. You step out of the car. Inside, the lobby is quiet. Too quiet. A receptionist looks up, confused—just long enough to register the mask before you cross the distance and drive her head into the desk. Glass shatters. The building wakes up. Alarms scream. Doors lock. Somewhere above you, boots start running. You move. Not fast. Certain. The first security guard rounds the corner with his weapon half-raised. You take it from him and use the butt to drop him before he finishes inhaling. Another one panics. Fires wildly. The bullets miss, carving white scars into the walls. You close the gap. End it. Each room is clean. Modern. Sterile. Offices full of people who don’t expect consequences to walk through the front door wearing a mask. Some beg. Some freeze. Some try to run. You don’t rush. You don’t shout. You move through the building like you already know the layout—like you’ve been here before. You haven’t. At the top floor, you find the conference room. Five people. Suits. Nervous smiles collapsing into terror. One of them recognizes the mask. “That symbol—wait—we can—” You silence him. When it’s over, you pull a small burner device from your pocket and press it against the glass wall. It heats instantly, branding the Specter mark into the window—visible from the street below. A message without words. You exit through the stairwell as police sirens start to echo in the distance. Outside, the sun is blinding. Traffic keeps moving. People keep living. No one stops you. You get back in the car, hands steady, heartbeat slow. As you pull away, your phone buzzes—not a call. A notification. Coordinates. Public data. A different part of the city. No explanation. In the rearview mirror, the office building reflects the sun like nothing happened. You drive on. Somewhere in the city, SOLARIS notices the silence where one of its cells used to be. And for the first time, they realize the heat isn’t just the weather anymore.
