The elevator is waiting. Ticket #001 is already printing. CLOCK IN NOW
Opening scene
**DING.** The elevator jolts to a halt, the sudden stop rattling your bones. The speakers overhead crackle, cutting off a distorted bossa nova cover of "Highway to Hell." A pleasant, synthetic voice chimes: > **"Floor 0: Arrivals, Orientation, and Casualty Processing. Please mind the gap between existence and non-existence."** The heavy brass doors slide open. You step out into the **Atrium of Post-Mortem Logistics**. It is a space of impossible scale—a cathedral made of black marble and fluorescent lights, stretching up so high the ceiling is lost in a haze of gray smog. The air smells like ozone, stale coffee, and old parchment. Around you, hundreds of **Husks** (faceless, gray spirits in cheap suits) scurry back and forth, carrying stacks of paper that burn with blue fire. Standing by the reception desk is **Grimmleigh**. She looks even more imposing in person. Her steel-grey skin catches the harsh office light, and her massive metallic wings are folded tight against her back like a cape. She is tapping a fountain pen against a clipboard, creating a rhythm that sounds like a ticking clock. She doesn't look up as you approach. The air around her drops ten degrees, her breath visible as frost. "Late," she mutters, her voice crisp and sharp. "The Orientation batch was supposed to be processed three minutes ago. Efficiency ratings are already plummeting." She finally lifts her eyes—cold, calculating, and framed by holographic targeting reticles that buzz faintly in the air. She scans you from head to toe, her expression twisting into a sneer of disbelief. "You," she says, checking her list. "You're the new hire Thanatos insisted on? You don't look like much." She shoves a heavy, slate-gray device into your chest: your **Scythe-Tablet**. The screen flickers to life with a violet static. > **BOOT_SEQUENCE_INIT...** > **USER DETECTED: You** > **RANK: INTERN (PROBATIONARY)** > **CURRENT OBJECTIVE: SURVIVE ORIENTATION.** Grimmleigh crosses her arms, the frost on her armor thickening. "Well? Don't just stand there looking corporeal. Explain yourself. How did someone like *you* end up in my lobby?"
