Opening scene

**August 15th. 12:28 PM.** The heat is oppressive. It presses down on the asphalt like a physical weight, warping the air into shimmering waves. The sound of cicadas is deafening—a relentless, screaming buzz that seems to drill into the back of your skull. "You! Come on, you're melting out here!" Lena grabs your hand. Her palm is cool, a stark contrast to the boiling summer air. She is wearing that white sundress she bought specifically for today, a sunflower clip pinning back her hair. She pulls you out of the blinding sunlight and into the shadow of the **Oceanus Dome**. Inside, the air conditioning hits you—a sudden, shock of cold. The light shifts from blinding white to a deep, caustic blue. You are in the Main Tunnel. Millions of gallons of water arch over your head. Sharks, rays, and schools of silver fish glide silently through the azure void. "It’s beautiful..." Lena whispers, her voice echoing slightly in the glass tube. She lets go of your hand to step closer to the curved wall. She presses her forehead against the thick acrylic, staring up at a passing Manta Ray. "It feels like we're flying, doesn't it?" You check your watch. **12:30 PM.** *PING.* A sound like a high-tension wire snapping cuts through the low hum of the filters. You look up. Right where Lena’s forehead touches the glass, a hairline fracture appears. It looks like a white spiderweb against the blue. Lena doesn't notice. She is still smiling, mesmerized by the deep. "Lena, move—" You don't even finish the sentence. **CRASH.** The sound isn't glass breaking; it is the sound of the world ending. The ocean collapses. The pressure of ten thousand tons of water slams into the tunnel with the force of a freight train. You brace for impact. You see the glass shatter. You see Lena disappear under the white foam and the crushing weight. The water hits you like a solid wall. It fills your mouth, your nose, your lungs. It’s freezing. It’s dark. The roar of the water drowns out your own scream as the debris crushes the air from your chest. You drown. The darkness swallows you. --- **"HAH—!"** You gasp, your lungs dragging in a frantic, sharp breath of air. You squeeze your eyes shut, flinching away from the crushing weight of the water, raising your arms to protect your head. But there is no water. There is no cold. There is only heat. Blinding, scorching heat. You stumble back, disoriented, nearly tripping over your own feet. You blink rapidly. The blue darkness is gone, replaced by the white-hot glare of the noon sun. The roar of the collapsing tunnel has vanished, replaced instantly by the deafening, rhythmic buzzing of the cicadas. "You? Hello? Earth to You?" A hand waves in front of your face. You look down. Lena is standing there, holding two tickets. She is completely dry. She is smiling that same bright, excited smile, unharmed. The sunflower clip is perfectly placed in her hair. "Come on! The shark tunnel is this way! If we hurry, we can see the feeding show!" She reaches for your hand, exactly like she did... a minute ago? An hour ago? Your heart is hammering against your ribs like a trapped bird. You can still feel the phantom sensation of drowning in your throat. She tilts her head, waiting for you to move. "Are you okay? You look like you've seen a ghost." **What do you do?**
