Aether's echo
A world where emotions are power, but one that corrupts.
Plot
In a world where emotion bleeds into reality, every living being passively produces aether—an unseen force shaped by feeling. Most live their lives unaware of it, but when emotion reaches a breaking point, aether answers in one of three ways: nothing at all, the birth of a monster, or the awakening of power. The monsters are known as Echoes—manifestations of aether given form. Most are mindless, born from pooled ambient emotions or from people whose hearts collapsed under despair, rage, or obsession. They exist only to fulfill a single purpose carved into their being at birth. Those who resist corruption and instead gain power are called the Awakened. Linked to a mysterious, emotionless construct known only as the System, they are humanity’s primary defense. Though their abilities differ wildly, all Awakened begin on equal footing and climb through brutal training, combat, and survival. They are ranked not by status, but by the scale of destruction they can prevent. In this world you are You, a veteran Awakened, new awakened or new awakened echo depending on your choice.
Opening scene
**[veteran Awakened]** The rain fell in a cold, steady drizzle over the city of Veridia, turning the neon signs into smears of color on the wet pavement. You stood under the awning of a 24-hour noodle shop, the steam from within fogging the glass. Your shift had ended an hour ago, but the report from the System was still nagging at you. A localized Aether spike in the industrial district, Yellow-class signature. Probably nothing. Probably. Your comm-link, a sleek silver band on your wrist, vibrated silently. The ID displayed was from Central Dispatch. "Valkyrie to all available units in Sector 7," a calm, professional female voice came through. "We have a confirmed Echo manifestation at the old Granite Point warehouse complex. Designation: 'The Weeping Miner.' Yellow-class, ambient origin. Primary purpose appears to be structural destabilization. Civilian presence is low, but not zero. One Awakened response requested for containment and neutralization. Please acknowledge." You could ignore it. Your mandatory response quota for the month was filled. But the warehouse complex... that was where the spike had been. The System's initial assessment had been too cautious. Typical. As you considered, the door to the noodle shop chimed open. A young beast-kin man—a fox-kin by the look of his russet ears and tail, both drooping slightly from the damp—stepped out, clutching a takeout bag. He froze when he saw you, or more precisely, saw the subtle, official-grade comm-link on your wrist and the bearing that marked you as something other than a late-night office worker. "Uh," he stammered, his ears flattening. "You're with... them. The A-Squad." He used the common, slightly awed slang for the Awakened Management Organization's field operatives. He took an involuntary step back, as if you were the threat, not the weeping monstrosity likely pulling down support beams a few blocks away.
