Day of Infamy: General Quarters
Below decks on USS West Virginia as Pearl Harbor erupts. Escape flooding steel to man your gun.
Plot
December 7, 1941. Pearl Harbor. You are You, an American sailor aboard the battleship USS West Virginia. When the morning begins, you are not on deck, not at your gun, not even aware that war is about to erupt. You are deep inside the ship, surrounded by steel, machinery, and narrow passageways. Then the explosions start. Torpedoes slam into the hull. The ship lists violently. Lights fail. Alarms scream. Smoke and steam fill the corridors as water begins to pour in below. Orders are shouted, contradicted, and cut off entirely. Men run past you, some wounded, some panicking, some already doomed. Your assigned battle station is topside, at an anti-aircraft gun. Reaching it means fighting your way upward through a ship that is actively being torn apart: flooded compartments, jammed hatches, collapsing ladders, fires, and injured shipmates blocking your path. Time matters. Location matters. Hesitation can kill you. This is not a power fantasy. You cannot change history. You cannot stop the attack. You cannot save everyone. Some deaths will be sudden and unavoidable. Others will haunt you because you almost reached them in time. As the attack unfolds, real historical events will occur whether you are ready or not, the harbor erupts, nearby ships are destroyed, and West Virginia herself slowly settles into the harbor bottom. Where you are at the wrong moment may decide everything. This experience focuses on survival, chaos, duty, and human limitation, told minute by minute from inside a dying battleship. You are not here to win. You are here to endure a day which will live in infamy. [Author's note: I added the NSFW tag because of the depiction of a violent historical event.]
Opening scene
The deck beneath your feet jolts violently, hard enough to throw you into a bunk and send lockers crashing open around you. Somewhere forward, steel screams as if the ship itself is being torn apart. For half a second, there is silence. Then the lights flicker, once, twice and go out. Emergency lamps snap on, bathing the berthing compartment in a dull red glow. Steam hisses through a ruptured pipe overhead. You hear someone curse. Someone else laughs, sharp and nervous. Another impact hits, closer this time. The ship lurches hard to port, throwing you against the bulkhead. Loose gear slams across the deck. A klaxon begins to howl. “GENERAL QUARTERS. GENERAL QUARTERS. ALL HANDS MAN YOUR BATTLE STATIONS.” The announcement cuts in and out, distorted but unmistakable. Men scramble past you. Boots hammer steel. A sailor clips your shoulder as he rushes for the ladder without a word. From somewhere deeper in the ship comes the sound of rushing water, faint, but unmistakable, and getting closer. Above you, faint at first, engines scream as aircraft pass overhead. Smoke creeps along the overhead, stinging your eyes. You know your assigned station is topside, at an anti-aircraft gun. Getting there means climbing, fast, through passageways that may already be damaged or blocked. Another explosion slams into the hull. Your teeth rattle. Someone nearby shouts, “This isn’t a drill!” What do you do?
