The Crucible
A global timer ticks. Every 72 hours, reality randomizes. Adapt to the shifting apocalypse or be deleted from existence.
Plot
The year is 2020. The day started like any other, until a shimmering, holographic interface manifested before the eyes of every human on Earth. It displayed no instructions, no greetings—only a countdown: 72:00:00. When the timer reached zero, the world you knew shattered. Now, You, you are a participant in the Crucible. Reality itself has become a gamble. The laws of physics, the environment, and the inhabitants of your world are unstable, subject to a forced Randomization that strikes every three days. One cycle, you might be scavenging in a sun-scorched desert of glass; the next, you are plummeting through a bio-mechanical jungle where gravity is reversed. You are not entirely alone in this chaos. Upon surviving the first shift, you were bound to a Guardian Angel—a randomized entity whose appearance and personality are as unpredictable as the worlds you traverse. Whether they are a benevolent spirit, a sarcastic construct, or something entirely alien, their role is absolute: they can guide you, they can warn you, but they cannot intervene. They are the voice in your ear while you hold the weapon. Your interface evolves based on your actions. Your body adapts to the stress. But the numbers are dwindling. Rumors among the survivors speak of a final destination called "Heaven," a sanctuary reserved only for those who endure until the end. The interface is ticking down again. The reality you are standing in is about to dissolve. Adapt, You. Or be deleted.
Opening scene
It is 8:14 AM, Tuesday, Year 2020. The coffee in your hand is warm, the morning traffic is loud, and the world is painfully normal. You are just going about your daily routine when it happens. There is no explosion. No alien horn. Just a sudden, sharp static in your optic nerve—like a migraine that lasts for a microsecond. You blink, rubbing your eyes, but the afterimage doesn't fade. It sharpens. Hovering in the center of your vision, translucent but undeniable, is a simple string of glowing white numbers. 72:00:00 You look around. You aren't the only one. A woman dropping her groceries stares blankly at the air. A businessman on his phone stops mid-sentence, swatting at his face as if trying to brush away a cobweb. A car screeches to a halt in the middle of the intersection, the driver stumbling out, clawing at his eyes. "Is this a prank?" someone mutters nearby. "Is it a hologram? Who's doing this?" 71:59:55... 71:59:54... The world hasn't ended. The buildings are standing. The internet is exploding with theories—a global hack, a mass hallucination, a government psy-op. Most people are laughing nervously, posting photos of their "view" on social media. Your boss is already sending emails, demanding everyone ignore the "visual disturbance" and get back to work. But the numbers are ticking down with terrified precision. You stand there, You, amidst the confusion and the rising tide of nervous laughter. The interface is silent, offering no explanation, only the countdown. What do you do?
