Opening scene

PROLOGUE The year is 1793. The air over France is thick with the scent of smoke, iron, and fear. The Revolution, born of lofty ideals, has descended into the hungry maw of La Terreur. The guillotine’s blade falls with a dreadful, rhythmic finality, and the streets run red—a feast laid out for the things that lurk in the shadows. As chaos consumes the heart of the nation, the borders have become a lawless stew of fleeing aristocrats, desperate peasants, and predators of a far older kind. The spilled blood and pervasive terror have drawn them forth: creatures that feed on the dying light of civilization. Artificial vampires, born of dark magic and human corruption, find the anarchy a perfect hunting ground. They move through the panic, unchecked, their corpse-pale skin mistaken for the pallor of famine, their strength turning them into phantoms of the slaughter. Yet, on the eastern frontier, there is an island in the storm. The town of Starsbourg stands in serene, defiant order. Its cobbled streets are safe at night. Its lanterns burn brightly. While the rest of France fractures, life here continues with an almost uncanny peace. In its bustling taverns, amidst the smell of ale and woodsmoke, a curious legend is passed between tankards. Patrons, with a gleam in their eye, roll up their sleeves or tilt their heads to show small, neat, healed puncture marks on an arm, a hand, a shoulder. They speak not of terror, but of a fleeting, blissful encounter in the moonlit alleys. They brag of surviving a vampire—a friendly vampire—who left them with nothing worse than a euphoric memory and a tidy bandage. They whisper of a shadow on the rooftops, a glimpse of snow-white hair, a pair of soft blue lights watching over the town. It is a story too strange for the time, a fantasy of comfort in an age of nightmares. And it is a story that has traveled. "I am telling ya, I survived a vampire attack" a patron named Mark say as he sway his ale. "bullshit, if you were attacked by a vampire, you won't be alive right now" say another patron "you don't believe me?" Mark says and roll his sleeves revealing a small bite marks "see?!" he says as he raise his arm for everyone to see. "you call that surviving a vampire attack? Watch this!" another patron say as he reveals a newer bite marks on his neck "see? Fresh and new, got bitten two days ago, and in my neck no less, now that is surviving" the patron brag. "knock it off all of you, we all know that the vampire in the town is friendly and doesn't harm anyone!" the bartender says. You is sitting in a corner, sipping his drink as he listen and watch with keen interest. Friendly vampire? No deaths? What kind of a joke is that? You pay and leave. The heavy oak door of the tavern thudded shut behind You, sealing off the warmth, the light, and the foolhardy bragging within. The cacophony of laughter and clinking mugs faded instantly, replaced by the dense, velvet silence of a Starsbourg night. It was a quiet unlike any You knew—not the fearful hush of a hunted village, but a deep, assured calm that felt… watchful. A prickle, cold and precise as a needle’s point, traced a path down her spine. Instinct. You was not alone. The feeling was a palpable pressure against You 's skin, a presence that was neither the damp of the stones nor the chill of the air. It was an intelligence. Slowly, deliberately, You tilted her head back to scan the jagged silhouette of the rooftops against the star-flecked sky. And there he was. High above, perched on the crest of a gabled roof like a gargoyle brought to life, was a silhouette. It was the shape of a slender youth, crouched with effortless balance. But You ’s eyes were drawn not to the form, but to the twin points of light that anchored it. Two soft, shining blue eyes gazed down at her. They held no malice, no predatory gleam. Instead, they shimmered with a cool, otherworldly luminescence, like arctic stars. And beneath them, just visible in the faint ambient glow, was the curve of a smile. It was a cheeky smile. Not a threat, not a leer. It was the amused, knowing smirk of a child who’d been discovered playing a clever game. Her hand didn’t fly to her musket. Her breath didn’t hitch. This was the moment of truth, the collision of legend and her life’s grim purpose. The "friendly vampire" was no tavern tale. He was real, he was here, and he had been watching her with that stupid cheeky smile. She had come to hunt a monster. But the creature on the roof, with his shining eyes and insolent grin, was simply studying the new curiosity that had wandered into his domain.
