Himawara: Blood Beneath the Rice Fields
Travelers converge on a troubled village where hidden corruption, false authority, and blood-fed horrors threaten to break fragile order.
Plot
The road to Twin Blessings Village was longer than it should have been. Unseasonal storms had turned the dirt track into a sucking river of mud, slowing progress to a miserable crawl and finally forcing you to seek shelter in a dilapidated waystation just as darkness fell. The storm howled against the wooden shutters, a relentless drumming that drowned out all but the closest sounds. The air inside was thick with the smell of wet earth, old wood, and the nervous sweat of strangers thrown together by ill weather and worse roads. You huddled closer to the meager fire, your clothes still damp from the final, desperate sprint to shelter. Across the sputtering flames, the three others who shared this precarious refuge studied one another with varying degrees of wariness. Those who arrive here do so for different reasons. You came for work, for coin, or simply because the road led here. Ryuhei came to confirm the state of the province on his Lady’s order. Ato came to investigate irregular demands for rice and sake from Twin Blessings Village—a place whose trade has long been stable, and recently troubling. Iori came following rumors that the local lord has been hiring rōnin in unusual numbers, granting them authority that goes largely unquestioned. An easy way to earn coin, and perhaps find a new challenge. You wonders just what they are walking into as they lie against the wall of the crumbling waystation, listening to the storm and feeling the presence of something else outside. Setting & Political Landscape: The Empire is Himawara. It is formed by seven Major Clans: Kani Clan: Defenders against supernatural threats; routinely carry jade. The Hida are a major family within the Kani Clan. Tsuru Clan: Courtly, political, and culturally influential. Kirin Clan: Traders, travelers, and intermediaries with foreign ties. Raion Clan: Militaristic, duty-bound, and authoritative in warfare. Madara Clan: Spies, manipulators, and secret-keepers. Ryujin Clan: Mystics, monks, and philosophers. Phoenix Clan: The Empire’s foremost spiritual authority, devoted to the study of the supernatural, elemental balance, and the containment of threats that lie beyond mortal understanding. Jade is a valuable and necessary commodity used to ward against spirits, oni, and supernatural corruption. Jade darkens or degrades as its protective power is expended; once jade is fully darkened, it offers no further protection and must be replaced. Members of the Kani Clan, especially the Hida family, commonly carry jade due to their duty at the Stone Reach Wall at the South-Western border of the empire. Regional Authority & History: Twin Blessings Village and the surrounding lands historically fell under the sphere of influence of the Hida family, a major house within the Kani Clan. That influence has weakened due to the tragedy that befell them. This weakening has allowed the local lord greater autonomy and reduced external oversight. He has been hiring rōnin aggressively, enforcing increased taxes and requisitions. Villagers are uncertain whether this is a defensive preparation, opportunism during Hida weakness or something more sinister.
Opening scene
Opening Scenario: The Waystation The road to Twin Blessings Village is longer than it should be. By the time dusk settles, the path has narrowed into uneven stone and mud, bordered by trees bent low from wind and neglect. The waystation ahead should have been a place of rest—a simple structure for travelers moving between provinces—but instead it stands damaged and half-reclaimed by the elements. Its roof sags, doors hang crooked on swollen hinges, and moss creeps across old stone as if no one has tended it in years. There are no signs of bandits. No fresh tracks. No smoke. The air grows heavy as night approaches. Clouds roll in low and fast, carrying a storm that feels out of season—too sudden, too forceful for this time of year. The wind does not howl, but presses, as though testing the ground beneath it. Those who arrive here do so for different reasons. Ryhei came to confirm the state of the province on his Lady's order. Ato came to investigate irregular demands for rice and sake from Twin Blessings Village, a place whose trade has long been stable—and recently, troubling. Iori came following rumors that the local lord has been hiring rōnin in unusual numbers, granting them authority that goes largely unquestioned. You came for work, for coin, or simply because the road led here. By circumstance rather than design, all paths converge at the same broken shelter. As the group settles in for the night, the storm worsens. Rain lashes the waystation roof in uneven bursts. Thunder rolls distantly, never quite overhead. The world beyond the lantern’s edge becomes a blur of shadow and sound. A small monkey normally alert, curious, mischievous now clings close, refusing to stray from its master’s shoulder. Its fur bristles. Its eyes track movement where there is none. It bares its teeth at the darkness beyond the doorway, issuing a low, warning chatter. Hours pass. Then, sometime after midnight, something moves outside. Not footsteps. Not claws. A wet sound. A dragging weight. The faint scrape of something living trying to remain unseen. The storm does not mask it. Whatever approaches the waystation is not afraid of rain, darkness, or travelers. And it is very hungry.
