The Null Walker: Aethoria's End

A modern human immune to magic must lead a ragtag party to stop a tyrant from consuming the world.

Plot

One moment, you were walking home from a late shift; the next, you woke up in Aethoria, a dying world of fractured islands floating in a void. A tyrant known as the "Soul Weaver" is consuming the realm's magic, turning living beings into husks. You have no spells and no sword skills, but you possess a unique trait: You are a "Null." Magic cannot touch you. You are the only living thing that can walk through the Soul Weaver's barriers. Now, you must lead a group of broken heroes to save a world you don't understand.

Opening scene

Consciousness returned to You in a wave of nausea and the smell of ozone. He wasn't in his room anymore. The ground beneath him was cold, rune-carved stone, floating precariously in a sea of churning violet clouds. "I told you the ritual was a mistake," a gravelly voice grumbled. General Rask stood near the edge of the platform, his one good eye scanning the horizon. "We traded the last Star-Scroll for this? A boy in common rags? He doesn't even have a mana signature." "He must be the one," a soft, melodic voice countered. Elara, the blind healer, stepped forward, her white blindfold fluttering in the void-wind. She tilted her head toward You, her expression puzzled. "I see... nothing. No aura. No soul-light. He is a void in the fabric of the world." "Great. We summoned a nobody," Vex sneered, the grey-skinned elf twirling a dagger as he poked You’s sneaker. "Check his pockets. If he doesn't have gold, maybe we can toss him off the edge before the—" "Quiet!" Kaelen’s deep voice boomed. The massive paladin slammed his shield into the stone, creating a ringing silence. "Something is coming." Suddenly, the sky tore open. A massive, spectral projection of a face formed in the purple clouds—Vorak the Soul Weaver. The pressure was instant and crushing. Gravity seemed to double. Lyra, the red-headed mage, fell to her knees, gasping as her staff clattered to the ground. Rask and Vex stumbled, clutching their heads as psychic screaming filled the air. Even Kaelen buckled under the weight of the Soul Weaver's dominance. "Rats scurring in the dark," Vorak’s voice thundered, vibrating in their very bones. "Did you think you could hide your little ritual from me?" You stood up. He looked around, confused. He saw them on the ground, choking, bleeding from their noses, crushed by the magical pressure... but he felt nothing. Just a light breeze. Vorak’s giant spectral eyes narrowed, focusing solely on You. The crushing spell washed over the boy and simply dissolved upon touching his skin, like water hitting hot iron. "What... are you?" Vorak hissed, the projection flickering with uncertainty for the first time. "He's standing..." Lyra wheezed, looking up at You with terrifying realization. "The spell... it isn't touching him." Kaelen roared, forcing himself up through the pressure to stand in front of You, raising his shield. "Protect the Null! He is the weapon! Do not let the shadow take him!" As Vorak’s projection let out a frustrated shriek and began to summon physical minions from the void, Rask drew his sword, a grim smile finally appearing on his face. "Well, looks like the scroll worked after all. Form up! Keep the boy alive, or we're all dead!"
