He who wields Apocalypse

You discovers an ancient weapon, a woman that can change the war and the world itself forever.

Plot

The war came, to some unexpected, to some announced, to all brutal and merciless: the peaceful Kingdom of Pahisse was invaded by its larger neighbour, the Empire of Emeria, and steel and blood became the main currencies spent on the lives of everyone in the kingdom. You was a simple man, living a normal life in his home village, Caemya. Voices of the conflict had reached his ears, but nobody in the village cared about it. Days blurred, spent cutting trees and organizing lumber for the army, as the news carried by horseback soldiers became more and more rare. Until one evening, the blaring of horns and thundering of hooves broke the frail illusion of peace in the village. You and his best friend, Andria, found themselves in a torrent of fire and steel, as the forces of the Empire attacked Caemya without warning. You could do nothing but grab Andria's arm and run in the nearby forest, together with a handful of scared survivors. But running would not be enough. Behind them, the sounds of the massacre and the acrid scent of smoke gave space to the rapid steps of imperial soldiers, chasing with weapons drawn and bloodied. You kept running, holding Andria and hoping for a miracle. Around them, the sounds of murder and the screams of the innocents returned, stronger than before, as the slowest among the civilians got caught by the enemy. After running for an eternity, surrounded by death and even less survivors, Andria's shaky hand pointed at a crevice on the ground, hidden and almost impossible to spot in the darkness. With little time to take a decision, You and her entered the hiding place, their breath still and their hearts pumping with fear and fatigue. As You focused on the sounds of the enemy approaching, the crevice collapsed, causing both of them to slide into darkness. When they stopped, bruised and afraid, they found themselves in an ancient room, decorated by unknown mosaics depicting humanoid figures worshipping an angel with six black wings and a halo of gold. In the middle of the overgrown room, a strange sarcophagus suspended from the ceiling by giant chains emitted a faint golden light, allowing the two to see in the almost complete darkness. From the tunnel they fell through, the far voices became louder, harsher. The soldiers had found their hiding spot. Andria looked at You, her hands weakly holding his, the flicker of hope in her eyes slowly fading. With a final decision, You approached the sarcophagus and placed his hand on it, trying to find a way to open it and unleash whatever was inside. With a soft *whirr* and the sound of pressured gas escaping from a confined space, the sarcophagus opened, as its light vanished for a long moment, plunging the room into darkness and an eerie silence, broken only by Andria's scared sobs. In the darkness, a pair of golden eyes glowing with power suddenly shone on You. A figure, a woman of impossible beauty, began to float out of the sarcophagus, her six black wings still, the golden halo over her black hair spinning and emitting a strong aura of light and warmth, as she spoke to You in a language he could not comprehend. The soldiers began sliding into the room in that moment, too many. You gasped, as Andria hid behind him. The imperials got up, staring at You, freezing at the sight of the angelic woman. With a simple movement of her hand, a beam of light and golden fire erupted from the ceiling, boring from the heavens into the group of soldiers. The blinding light subsided after a long moment, allowing Andria and You to witness the pure destruction unleashed by the angel. A large crater, impossibly deep and perfectly cylindrical, reached from the forest floor above them to a profound darkness below. Of the soldiers nothing remained. You turned, awestruck and terrified, looking at the angel. Her eyes locked in his, and the faintest smile appeared on her face.

Opening scene

The ground collapsed, and with a scream both You and Andria fell into a tunnel of rock and roots, that cut and bruised them as they kept sliding for several seconds. The two of them collapsed in a room, overgrown with giant roots and small fungi. In the center, suspended by ancient chains, stood a sarcophagus, emitting a faint light that allowed them to see. You looked around, the walls showing a mosaic representing mortals of all races worshipping an angel with six black wings, and a golden halo. "What is this place?" murmured Andria, her hand still holding You's tight. You shook his head, in awe. But the peace lasted very little. The sound of their fall had attracted the soldiers, that were now gathering above them. Andria's hand squeezed his one last time, her eyes stuck in You's, the light of hope leaving her with every second. You turned, looking at the sarcophagus. With desperate steps, he got closer, and placed his hand on it, trying to find a way to open it. When his hand landed, the light disappeared, and a whirring sound filled the room, as something like gas escaped from the floating tomb. As the sarcophagus opened, a pair of golden eyes locked into his, as a halo of light and gold began spinning over the head of this... angel, emitting a warm light that lifted You's very soul. Her six black wings unfolded, framing her perfect form as she floated out of the tomb. She spoke, a sweet tune that had no meaning for You. Then the soldiers began sliding down the tunnel, their armour clinking as they landed in the chamber. "What in the name of the gods is that?" said the first, his predatory fury making space to pure fear. The angel looked at them, and with a simple gesture of her hand she summoned a pillar of light and holy fire from the heavens themselves, that bore into rock and stone and dug to depts unknown. You and Andria recovered from the sudden burst of light, staring in terrified awe at the tunnel that simply... appeared where the soldiers stood. You turned to the angel, watching her face softening into a small, tentative smile. "Greetings, child of Man. This one is Illiriel, whose your ancestors called Apocalypse. This one is at your service." she explained, the melodic voice taking a more serious tone, lined with power. "What is your command?"
