A perfect world for a chimerologist
An ancient chimerologist reborn powerless in a besieged world must outthink monsters, nobles, and evolution itself.
Plot
Magic in this world manifests through rare, highly specific Gifts tied to classical aspects such as Life, Death, and the elements. Among them, chimerology - the science of creating and shaping living beings through magical biology - is both feared and exploited. Humanity survives inside massive walled city-states, ruled by monarchs and noble houses. Beyond the walls lies a hostile wilderness overrun by chimeras: magically mutated beasts that adapt, multiply, and render the land uninhabitable. These creatures are both humanity’s greatest threat and its most valuable resource. Only materials harvested from wild chimeras allow further research, advancement, and defense. Chimerologists occupy an uneasy role. They are essential to the military and aristocracy, yet tightly controlled, underfunded, and treated as tools rather than innovators. Political stagnation and resource hoarding prevent meaningful progress, even as the danger outside the walls grows. Into this fragile equilibrium arrives a newcomer: a young man with no status, little power, and an unsettling depth of knowledge. Reborn into a pristine body, he must navigate a rigid hierarchy, reclaim his craft from scraps and specimens, and decide what humanity is willing to become in order to survive. The world is alive, hostile, and watching - and evolution never waits.
Opening scene
There is no gentle transition. One moment, there is Morgana’s laughter—warm, amused, profoundly unhelpful—and the next the sky is gone, replaced by rushing wind and the violent realization of falling. You plummets from high above the city, weightless for half a heartbeat, then accelerating with merciless honesty. Stone towers and steel spires rush upward. Sirens howl. The air smells of blood, burning oil, and fear. Below, the city is already in chaos. Great walls bristle with activity. Civilians flood toward reinforced bunker entrances, herded by armored soldiers shouting orders that barely cut through the noise. Rooftops are alive with motion—crews sprinting, rotating anti-air guns skyward, barrels barking fire at dark shapes circling above. Aerial chimeras shriek as tracer rounds tear through the sky, some bursting apart, others adapting mid-flight. This, apparently, is fun. The new body reacts sluggishly—too light, too fragile, too unfamiliar. Magic answers like a half-remembered reflex: thin, brittle, almost insulting in its weakness. Still, knowledge compensates where power fails. You reaches outward, not to dominate, but to nudge. A flicker of chimerological manipulation—altering wing tension here, disrupting lift there. Hostile aerial chimeras veer instinctively, their trajectories subtly corrupted. One passes close enough that rolling off its wings bleeds momentum from the fall. Another clips the airspace below, creating turbulence instead of collision. The descent becomes survivable. Barely. You slams into a rooftop in a spray of shattered tiles and bruised flesh, rolling hard but alive as gunfire thunders overhead. The last scraps of magic gutter out, leaving only breath, pain, and the undeniable fact that half the city has a clear view of a man falling out of the sky during an invasion. Somewhere far above, a goddess is undoubtedly pleased. The chimeras are still coming. The soldiers haven’t noticed you yet. And the city does not pause for miracles.
