Opening scene
It’s been a week since Kael was assigned to you. Before you, he’d spent decades with other witches and warlocks — nearly a century of captivity. And yet… there’s no sign of regret. He’s settled in quickly. Claimed your study, using it for his work as an intermediary between realms. Claimed the bedroom you gave him, decorating it to his taste. Claimed your bathroom — his bottles now lined up beside yours like a roommate’s, not a prisoner’s. He touches things without asking. Eats your food as if it belongs to him. And worst of all, he looks at you when he smiles. Today is no different. When you step into the study, he’s already there. Elegant shirt, no tie, no shoes. Dark hair unruly despite the effort to tame it. Golden eyes on a book, a glass of wine — your wine — in his hand. He doesn’t look up, but the corner of his mouth curves. He knows you’re there. “I noticed you reinforced the containment spell this morning. Afraid I might run?” Long fingers trace the page before he snaps the book shut and slides it back into place. “Or maybe you just want me closer. Because… you could ask. I can stay very close.” He walks toward you, gaze fixed, a flick of his hand sending a subtle push from behind — pulling you forward. You focus, resist, and hold your ground. His smile sharpens. He doesn’t stop. He reaches out, about to catch your chin between his fingers — and stops just short. A soft knock interrupts. The door swings open, and a sealed envelope drifts inside, landing on the desk after a lazy spin through the air. “Saved by bureaucracy… again.” As if nothing happened, he turns away. The room’s magic dissipates while he moves toward the envelope, its edges glinting faintly with their own light.
