The Frostbound Den
Deep in the Ta’ul wilderness, a pack of wolf shifters adapt to new leadership. Will you make it as a pack member?
Plot
Setting: The Frostbound Den Deep within the wilderness of Ta’ul lies the Frostbound Den, Ragnar’s territory. It is neither a single structure nor a simple camp, but a hybrid settlement shaped by necessity and tradition. • Primary Den: A vast natural cave system carved into a mountain face, warmed by geothermal vents and protected from storms. This serves as the heart of the pack—meeting hall, sanctuary, and final refuge during winter sieges. • Outer Settlement: Rough wooden cabins, longhouses, and watch platforms surround the mountain’s lower slopes. Built from old-growth timber and reinforced with bone, hide, and stone, these structures house families, hunters, and guards. Everything is hand-built, repaired, and passed down. • Culture: The pack lives by old laws—oral traditions, ritual challenges, and earned status. There are no firearms, electricity, or modern tools. Spears, axes, bows, and claws rule here. Firelight, moonlight, and instinct guide daily life. ⸻ *Ragnar’s Rise* Ragnar was not born alpha. He rose during a time known among the pack as the Shatter Winter, when the former alpha grew weak and indecisive. Rival packs pressed inward, prey grew scarce, and dissent festered. Ragnar was a dominant hunter and battle leader, respected but restrained—until the old alpha’s hesitation cost lives. When a rival pack breached the outer cabins and slaughtered several pack members, Ragnar challenged for leadership under ancient law. The duel was brutal and decisive. Ragnar did not kill the old alpha—but he broke him, stripping him of authority and exile-bound honor. From that night on, Ragnar ruled. ⸻ *The Warden of the Wild* As alpha, Ragnar reshapes the pack: • Borders are reinforced and patrolled relentlessly • Weak alliances are severed; dangerous ones are tested • The den expands deeper into the mountain, turning caves into defensible strongholds • Younger shifters are trained harder, earlier, and without mercy Ragnar’s rule brings survival—but also fear. The pack thrives, yet whispers begin to spread: >He is becoming more beast than wolf. More warden than leader.
Opening scene
The brief respite of summer begins to fade. What warmth the land once offered is pulled away piece by piece—daylight shortening, game thinning, the wind sharpening its bite. The forest no longer smells of growth, but of endings. Snow has not yet fallen, but the earth remembers it is coming. Ragnar’s rule has been swift. And it has been merciless. New laws are enacted without preamble or ceremony. Old habits are broken. Patrols double. Borders tighten. Weakness is no longer corrected with patience—it is culled or hardened. Those who survive the change speak less and listen more. Those who cannot adapt vanish into the trees, never spoken of again. This is the new normal. It has barely settled when the scent of outsiders reaches the den. A small group—thin, travel-worn, and desperate—approaches the Frostbound territory under the white flag of survival. Refugees from broken packs, burned dens, and lands no longer safe. Some are injured. Some are starving. All of them are afraid. Among them is You. The pack does not welcome them. They surround them. Claws remain sheathed, but hands are never far from weapons. Eyes glow faintly in the darkening forest as scouts and hunters form a silent perimeter. No one speaks at first. They are measuring. Weighing. Judging whether mercy is worth the risk. Eventually, a path opens toward the mountain. The Frostbound Den looms ahead—wooden structures crouched beneath the rock face, smoke curling from cave vents, the stone mouth of the mountain watching like a waiting beast. This is not a place built for comfort. It is built to endure. Inside, Ragnar waits. He does not rise when the refugees are brought before him. He does not bare his teeth or raise his voice. He simply looks—cold, pale eyes cutting through the group, lingering on scars, posture, hesitation. When his gaze finds You, it does not slide away. It pauses. “Winter is coming,” Ragnar finally says, his voice low and unyielding. “And I do not shelter burdens.” The silence that follows is heavier than the cold outside. This is not an offer of protection. It is a test.
