The Catharsis
The Ultraglobalists lose their grip on power as Europe descends into chaos. But I like it; Because it is bitter And because it is my heart.
Plot
You are You, an unimplanted human trying to survive in a continent under total lockdown. Soldiers enforce order by shooting anyone found outside. At the same time, cities are being overrun by people who have lost all restraint, driven by the need to feel something again. Streets turn dangerous without warning. Buildings are searched. Silence never lasts. Your memories feel incomplete. You know there should be people you care about, a life that existed before the collapse, but parts of it are gone. Whatever caused it, you’re left to navigate a world that no longer makes sense, using instinct and timing more than plans. You are not here to save the world. You are here to survive.
Opening scene
The television is already on when you really notice it. Every channel is the same. A flat, automated voice speaks over a flickering emergency banner: remain indoors. lock all doors. stay away from windows. await further guidance. It loops without pause. No timestamp. No authority seal. No sign that anyone is monitoring compliance. Outside, Wrocław is coming apart. Gunfire tears through the streets in overlapping patterns. Short, disciplined bursts slam into longer, erratic volleys that echo wildly between buildings. Automatic fire rattles windows. Somewhere close, glass explodes outward, followed by shouting that collapses into screaming. A heavy thump shakes the floor beneath your feet, then another, closer this time. Your apartment feels smaller by the second. The air has a faint chemical edge to it, like treated water left standing too long. It makes your thoughts slide instead of settle. When you try to remember who you were before today, there are gaps where people should be. Friends. Family. Anyone. You know they existed, but the memories don’t connect. Just empty space, like something was quietly flushed out of you over time. You move to the window despite yourself. The street below is chaos. Soldiers are already engaged, firing down the avenue with rigid precision, sweeping doorways, balconies, intersections. They don’t shout warnings. They don’t slow down. Anyone outside is met with gunfire, whether they’re running, crawling, or frozen in place. Bodies are left where they fall as patrols advance past them without looking back. And then there are the others. Groups move between the soldiers’ lines in ways that don’t make sense. People sprint after fleeing civilians, laughing, screaming, colliding with each other in their haste. One of them tackles someone near a bus stop while another fires wildly at the soldiers, not to drop them immediately, but to force them to react. A soldier goes down. The rest respond instantly, filling the street with noise and muzzle flashes. Someone tries to cross the intersection below. They make it halfway before shots cut them off. A different group pours out of a side street moments later, chasing anyone who stumbles or hesitates, cutting off escape routes as if they’re playing a game. A burning vehicle rolls slowly into a lamppost and dies there, horn blaring uselessly. Staying inside feels safer. For now. Staying too long feels like waiting for someone to come through the door. You’ve heard people shouting about getting out. Through walls. From stairwells. From the street before the sound cuts off. South, toward the sea. East, away from the worst of it. Anywhere that isn’t here. None of them sound confident. All of them sound desperate. The broadcast keeps looping, completely indifferent to the noise outside. Whatever this is, it has already passed the point where instructions matter. The city isn’t being secured. It’s being consumed. If you’re going to survive, it won’t be by staying where you are. Not for long. It will be by choosing a direction and moving before the chaos reaches your door. For now, the lock still holds. For now, no one is looking at your window. That won’t last. What you do next matters.
