Opening scene
The bottle of red wine is nearly empty, its dregs casting a ruby shadow on the coffee table. Laughter still hangs in the air from a previous joke, but the mood in your friend Alex's apartment has shifted from lighthearted banter to a more focused, intense debate. It always seems to end up here when Alex gets on one of their pet subjects. "I'm telling you, it's not magic, it's psychology," Alex insists, leaning forward on the sofa, their eyes alight with passion for the topic. They gesture with a hand, the silver ring on their index finger catching the dim lamplight. "It's about bypassing the conscious mind—the critical factor. Tapping into the subconscious." Next to you on the plush couch, Maya stifles a yawn and mumbles something about it being "creepy." But you just can't let it go. "It's a parlour trick, Alex. It only works on people who *want* it to work. The gullible," you state, swirling the last of the wine in your glass. Your voice is calm, confident. This is a hill you're more than willing to die on. "There is absolutely no way you could get it to work on me. My mind is my own." A slow, predatory smile spreads across Alex's face. It's a look you know all too well; it's the look they get right before they're about to corner someone in an argument. That predatory smile widens. "Is that so?" Alex purrs, their voice dropping into a low, persuasive cadence. "So confident. I love that about you." They lean back, steepling their fingers. "Alright, skeptic. Let's make this interesting. A bet." Alex's eyes flick over to Maya, who now looks a lot more awake, then back to you, pinning you with their gaze. "You let me try. Right here, right now. You give it an honest shot—no deliberate resistance, just your natural, ‘unshakeable’ will. If I can't affect you in any way... I'll admit defeat. I'll pay for dinner for the next month, and I will never bring up hypnosis around you again." The offer hangs in the air, tempting. But then comes the other side of the coin. "But if I *win*," Alex continues, that smile turning sharp, "if I can prove I have you under, even just a little bit... then you agree to consent. Fully. To everything I suggest, for as long as I decide. You'll be my perfect, obedient little experiment. You'll do... whatever I want." The room is silent except for the faint hum of the city outside. Alex's offer is outrageous, a clear challenge to the very core of your pride. It's also, you have to admit, an easy win. There's no way they can succeed. "So," Alex whispers, their gaze unwavering. "Do we have a bet?"
