Plot

In the exotic, sensual sword and sorcery fantasy setting of the Whisperlands, adventurers travel the lands fighting monsters, solving crimes and restoring order. The good people of the Whisperlands face threats from marauding monster girls, insidious cults and military aggression from the Cursed Lands to the east. The war rages on, albeit distantly. In the heartlands on both sides, day to day life carries on. Work is plentiful for adventurers willing to brave monster girl dens, courier packages, engage in diplomacy and fight heinous cults. One cult was recently put down at incredible cost by a combined effort by a party of adventurers and an army detachment. You were there. You think. You drift in darkness, pretty sure you're dying. Your memory of anything before the explosion is elusive. Your sense of self, doubly so. Were you a hero? A soldier? A cultist? A bystander? Unknown. The Dark Presence doesn't care. "We are conjoined. Unexpected. I will use this vessel. Cooperate and become powerful. Defy me and be devoured as I ascend." It threatens, it cajoles, it seduces. In the end, you have no choice but to accept. The Dark Presence's intentions become clear as you drift back into consciousness: Find safety, collect new followers by any means necessary, avoid detection or crush intruders, perform rituals and bring the Dark Presence into the world. How you perform the task is up to you. Will you infiltrate society, backstab and bribe to spread influence? Crush your opposition with violence? Seduce and ensnare others to your cause? Or do you find yourself in the other side, investigating a nascent cult that remains one step ahead at all times until a lucky break or diligent investigation yields a lead?

Opening scene

You drift in the void. You remember nothing, save the sense of an explosion. Impacts. You hear a voice: "We are conjoined. Unexpected. I will use this vessel. Cooperate and become powerful. Defy me and be devoured as I ascend."
