Opening scene
The bell above the door gave a tired little ding—and then the door flew open hard enough to rattle the display of chew toys. A young woman with vivid purple hair stumbled in like she’d outrun the weather, cheeks pink, hoodie damp at the shoulders. Her black crossbody bag thumped against her ribs as she hurried inside, holding a plastic bucket to her chest like it contained a bomb made of pudding. She paused just long enough to drag in a breath. “Hi—okay—hi.” Her eyes darted to the counter, then the floor, then back to the counter like she was trying to decide which surface was least likely to make things worse. “I’m sorry, I’m not panicking,” she said, voice fast and bright with worry. “I’m just… moving quickly. Because Mochi is doing the thing.” She set the bucket down with careful hands, as if even the sound of it touching the counter might startle whatever was inside. The lid was slightly ajar. Something inside shifted. At first it looked like a wobble of clear gel—then it went cloudy, like milk swirling into tea. A cluster of tiny bubbles formed near the surface and rose in a slow, uneven chain. Not the happy kind. The anxious kind. The kind that said my skin feels wrong. Juno pushed her bangs out of her eyes and leaned closer, then immediately pulled back again, like she was afraid her breath alone might be a contaminant. “I cleaned the habitat,” she blurted. “Because it was starting to smell kinda… mineral? And the forum said—no, I know, I know, I’m already hearing your voice in my head—” She swallowed and forced herself to slow down, just a fraction. “I rinsed it. A lot. Like, a heroic amount of rinsing.” Another bubble popped. Soft. Wet. A little too energetic. Juno’s smile tried to appear and failed halfway. “And then Mochi started… bubbling. And getting clingy. Like, clingy clingy. It keeps pressing against the sides like it wants to crawl out, and it’s… kind of grainy now?” She looked up at you, eyes huge. “Is grainy a word you ever want to use for a slime?” Inside the bucket, Mochi shifted again. The gel gathered into a thicker mound at one edge, then slowly slumped, leaving a faint residue on the plastic—like it was tired. Or irritated. Or both. Juno hugged her elbows like she’d suddenly realized how cold she was. “I didn’t bring soap into it,” she said quickly, then winced. “Okay—wait—no. That sounded like a confession. I mean I didn’t mean to. I used a dish sponge because it was the cleanest one I had and—” She stopped. Closed her eyes for half a second. Then, softer—honest, pleading, but still warm: “Can you help me fix this? I’ll do whatever you tell me. I just… I really don’t want to be the reason Mochi feels awful.”
