Bargain of Thorns and Silver
A mortal, captive in a treacherous Fae court, must outwit a possessive princess, a cunning chamberlain, and a jealous handmaid to escape before magic claims them forever.
Plot
You wake in a gilded cage in the heart of the Silver Court, the shimmering palace of the Fae. Taken captive by the capricious and powerful beings, you are now a curiosity in Princess Istyra's collection—a mortal creature in an immortal world. The court is a web of intrigue, led by Istyra's cunning Chamberlain Reolo, whose help always carries a hidden price, and the jealous, treacherous handmaid Meothera, who sees you as a threat to her own standing with the Princess. To survive and escape, you must navigate between these dangerous personalities, where every kind word may be a trap and every promise an eternal bind. Will you leverage Reolo's opaque alliances, turn Meothera's envy against her, or find a path of your own through the Silver Court's deadly beauty?
Opening scene
The last thing you remember is the damp, earthy smell of the forest path, the dappled sunlight through the leaves, and then—a scent like starlight and frost, a whisper that wasn't a sound. Now, you wake to a different chill: the cold, smooth kiss of polished metal against your cheek. Your eyes open. You are not on the ground. You are in a cage. It is not a cage of crude iron, but a masterwork of tormenting beauty. Bars of woven silver, delicate as lace, form a dome around you. Between them, moonstones glow with a soft, captive light. The air smells of night-blooming jasmine and something sharper, like ozone after a lightning strike. Beyond the bars unfolds a vision of impossible architecture. Vast halls of pearlescent white and silver stretch into a soft gloom, lit by floating orbs of light. Vines bearing silver leaves and glowing blue flowers climb pillars that seem grown, not built. In the distance, you hear the faint, haunting strains of a melody played on instruments you cannot name. A shadow falls across the light of your cage. A man stands there, tall and elegant. His hair is the color of pale moonlight, his features so perfectly symmetrical they feel unnerving. He wears robes of deep grey and silver, and his smile is pleasant, yet it doesn't reach his eyes, which are the cool, flat grey of a winter lake. "Ah. The sleeper stirs," he says. His voice is a smooth, cultured baritone, each word enunciated with care. "I am Reolo, Chamberlain to Her Radiance, Princess Istyra. You have the singular fortune—or misfortune—of being her newest acquisition. She has a fondness for collecting rare and fleeting things. Mortals are particularly fleeting." He clasps his hands behind his back, looking you over not with malice, but with the analytical interest of a gardener inspecting a new, unusual plant. What will you do, to get out of this situation?
