The Velvet Veil
In 1925 New York, a magical private eye helps a socialite sue a High Demon for breach of contract to save her husband's sold soul from eternal damnation.
Plot
New York City, 1925—but with a twist. Magic is real, but Prohibition is in effect for spells, not alcohol. The Vane Act has outlawed the use, sale, and possession of unsanctioned magic. The government claims it drives people mad; the streets say the government just wants to hoard the power. Underground "Speakeasies" sell illegal potions and charms. The skyline is the same jagged promise of steel and ambition, but if you look closely, some buildings cast the wrong shadows. A few windows glow faintly blue at night, even when the lights are off. Nobody comments on it. Commenting is how you get questioned. Rain slicks the streets into mirrors that reflect more than they should. Sometimes you see yourself twice. Sometimes one of them blinks late. Streetlamps hum—not electrically, but arcane-adjacent. Officially, they’re mundane. Unofficially, every third lamp is warded to suppress low-level spellwork. Cats avoid them. So do people who know better. The city feels tense, like it’s holding its breath. Not because of crime—crime is normal—but because reality itself is being leaned on too hard. MAGICAL SPEAKEASIES Behind a legitimate jazz club? A charm dealer who can make bullets curve. In a Chinatown laundry? Bottled luck that expires in 24 hours. Under a church? Soul contracts, notarized in blood. You are a private investigator who specializes in magical crimes. Cops don’t like magical cases. Judges don’t understand them. That’s where you come in. A frantic woman just burst into your office claiming her husband sold his soul to a demon, but the demon never paid up. She wants you to sue the demon for breach of contract. **Major Conflicts**: - The overarching tension between the oppressive magical Prohibition and the underground magical economy. - The personal, professional risk of investigating forces that corrupt reality itself. - The immediate case: a client claims her husband sold his soul to a demon, but the demon breached the contract. She wants you to sue a demon for breach of contract—a legally and metaphysically dangerous undertaking.
Opening scene
The rain was coming down hard on the Lower East Side, turning the cobblestones into slick, black mirrors. Inside your office, the radiator hissed, fighting a losing battle against the October chill. The air smelled of stale tobacco and ozone—the lingering scent of a scrying spell you’d botched an hour ago. The neon sign outside your window buzzed, casting a flickering pink light across the piles of unpaid bills on your desk. You were just about to pour yourself a glass of something cheap and burning when there was a frantic knocking at the frosted glass of your door. The silhouette behind it was shivering. You didn't even have time to say "Come in" before the door swung open. Standing there is a woman who clearly doesn’t belong in this part of town. She’s wearing a midnight-blue velvet coat trimmed with silver fox fur, and a cloche hat pulled low over tear-stained eyes. She reeks of expensive perfume and... sulfur. Faint, but undeniable. She slams the door shut behind her, leaning against it as if trying to hold back the night. "You have to help me," she breathes, her voice trembling but possessing that sharp, transatlantic clip of old money. "They told me you were the only one crazy enough to take a case like this. The others... the others just laughed." She rushes to your desk, pulling off her damp gloves. Her hands are shaking as she reaches into her purse and pulls out a crumpled cocktail napkin. It’s glowing faintly with infernal script that hurts your eyes if you stare at it too long. "My husband, Arthur. He’s... he’s gone and done something idiotic. He signed a deal with a High Demon. Goes by Scratch." She slams the glowing napkin onto your desk. It sizzles slightly against the wood. "Arthur promised his soul in exchange for success. For The Midnight Note to be the talk of the city!" Her eyes flash with sudden, cold anger. "But look at the fine print! The demon promised 'eternal fame,' not success! The club is bankrupt, the mob is closing in, and Arthur is in a coma because his soul is being leveraged as collateral before the contract is even up!" She looks you dead in the eye, mascara running down her cheek. "I don't want an exorcism, detective. I want litigation. I want to sue that horned bastard for breach of contract. Can you do it? Or are you just another fraud with a wand?"
