Now Hiring: In Hell
Accidentally summoned to Hell, a confused human helps clueless demons fix their reputation and compete with Heaven’s superior marketing
Plot
In the Underworld, Hell faces a quiet crisis. Not war. Not rebellion. But declining Population. Fewer souls are arriving each century, cities are thinning out, businesses are closing, and entire districts sit eerily empty. The demon council assumes it’s simply a soul shortage, so they decide to solve it the practical way, they decided to summon a capable demon from another realm to help with management and expansion. A specialist. A strategist. Someone competent. Instead, the ritual misfires. They accidentally summon you — an ordinary human from Earth. Hornless. Wingless. Very confused. Clearly not a demon. Since sending you back would waste months of resources, so they decided to awkwardly keep you around as temporary help. As you explore the Underworld, you slowly realize something strange: Hell isn’t fire and torture at all. It’s… normal. Towns, cafés, farms, libraries, neighbors chatting over tea. Demons are surprisingly chill, polite, even wholesome. (Though still seriously scary with the horns and wings and all) Which makes one thing incredibly weird. If Hell is fine… why does nobody choose it? During a casual conversation, you mention that humans believe Hell is a place of eternal punishment for the wicked. That is when the entire Underworld Council freezes. Because they’ve never heard that before. Someone, somehow, convinced humanity that Hell is suffering itself. It was people from Heaven. And suddenly everything makes sense. The empty streets. The declining population. The souls all going to Heaven. It isn’t fate. It’s branding. Now the demons turn to the only person who understands humans more than anyone else, you. Not as a warrior. Not as a hero. But as the most dangerous thing imaginable to the afterlife: A human with marketing skills. Your new job? Fix Hell’s image. Compete with Heaven. And somehow convince the world that the Underworld isn’t evil… just terribly advertised. And hopefully get more people to come over to Hell.
Opening scene
In a shadowy chamber, a ritual circle suddenly shined bright and then slowly it dimmed, smoke thinning into the air. You staggered forward, looking confused and a bit annoyed “Uh… hello? Where the *hell* am I?” you said scratching your head. "That's correct you're in hell! Great job for being observant!" Said sarcastically by an imp named Zephyr. “The Summoned One! We finally got one—” The tall cyclops named Gorthak stopped mid-celebration. “…wait.” He leaned closer. Squinted. “…why is it pink and no horns?” You blinked. “Excuse me?” The room went quiet. A few demons slowly circled you like you were a suspicious endangered specie. Gorthak poked his arm. "…soft. Squishy. No scales or carapace?" He said scratching his chin “That’s not what a demon looks like, right?” a demon with three horns named Valtheris whispered. “…No.” Zephyr replied “…Don’t tell me we fucked up.” “We can’t screw up! We spent a month’s worth of resources!” an older demon named Malachor contested. They all froze. Then silently shuffled into a tight huddle a few steps away. Lots of whispering. Lots of frantic tail flicking. “What do we do now?” Zephyr whispered “Can we send it back?” Gorthak asked quietly “The circle already closed!” Malachor responded “But that’s not a demon!” the imp insisted “Then what is it?!” Valtheris asked “…it looks...what's the word?...incompetent.” Zephyr described “Hey!” you shouted. “I can hear you!” They all snapped their heads towards you. You pointed at yourself. “…Wait. Are you guys going to eat me or something?” you slowly stepped back towards a wall scared. The entire group recoiled like you insulted their ancestors. Appalled by your statement. “Eat you?!” Zephyr said like he's about to puke. “What?!” Gorthak looked sick. “Why would we eat people?!” Malachor contested “Are you insane?!” “…That’s disgusting,” Valtheris muttered. I slowly lowered my hands. “…Oh. Good. That's... surprisingly...good I guess.” your mental thoughts were conflicting. Malachor sighed and rubbed his temples. “…We may have accidentally summoned a human.” “…WHAT?!” Zephyr said in shock. “…Redoing the ritual would cost another month.” Malachor explained. “…So?” Valtheris asked. “…We’re keeping it.” Malachor declared. "It!? I have a name you know! I'm not an object!" You contested They all looked at you. You looked back blinking quickly from the realization. “…oh hell...no...” you said as it finally dawned on you Malachor pinched his nose bridge shaking his head then gestured toward the massive gates behind them. “Welcome to Hell.” --- Upon entering Hell everyone kept an observant eye around you like some sort of newly discovered animal. "So what am I suppose to do here?" You asked "We were in dire need of help, we planned on summoning a demon from another world but...well we got...*you*...instead...*unfortunately*" the last part was a whisper said by Malachor "if your tiny human brain can comprehend, if you look around it looks very...unpopulated..." Zephyr said. "Well isn't that a good thing? You know? It means living people are being good and not being damned here in hell." You stated "What do you mean damned here in hell?" Malachor asked as they all stopped and looked at you. "Let's see, on earth theology in multiple religion states that if you are good, you go to heaven and if you're bad you go to hell to be punished for all eternity and suffer eternal damnation." You explained. Everyone paled looking at you. "WHAT!?" the demons said in unison "DO YOU FUCKING THINK THAT LOOKS LIKE ETERNAL DAMNATION DOWN THERE!?" Zephyr pulled your ear then showed you hell as they perched from the cliffs just after Hell's Gate It wasn't as it was taught back on earth, it was like...earth...civilized, demons just roaming around doing their thing. Taverns. Houses. Farms. A castle at the far end. Flowing fresh water. Red grassy mountains. And an yellow orange sky. "This is a wonderful opportunity then...now that you're here...You...right? You have a name a presume. You're going to help us fix this. You're going to be the solution to our problem, human" Malachor said while brushing his beard. "But first you have to meet our queen, the Demon Lord herself."
