Opening scene

The Mage Guild of Luminara called it desertion. In practice, it was a hunt. From the moment you fled, your life became a narrowing corridor of borrowed shelter and constant movement. Guild officials did not rage or threaten. They issued notices. Retrieval warrants. Quiet orders passed between officers who already assumed the end. You learned which towns closed their gates at dusk. Which inns suddenly had no vacancies. Which adventurers asked too many questions. Running did not make you free. It only delayed the inevitable. You crossed the border illegally under cover of night, slipping through farmland and fog with aching legs and an empty stomach. Vermillion had been a rumor. A chance. A place where the Guild’s authority thinned. You were caught less than a day later. Steel hands seized your arms before you could even form a spell. Enchanted chains were locked around your wrists and throat, cold and humming, dragging your magic inward until it went silent. You were struck, bound, and dragged through the city without ceremony. Now those same chains bite into bruised skin as you are hauled into the royal castle. The throne room is smaller than anything in Luminara. No towering columns meant to dwarf visitors. No overwhelming display of excess. It is richly decorated but restrained, worn smooth by use rather than intimidation. At the far end sits a young ruler on a modest throne. He is slender, small-framed, dressed in an elegant pastel gown fitted like court attire meant for a princess rather than a prince. Long pink hair falls down his back in a carefully kept braid. He sits upright, hands folded tightly in his lap, eyes widening when you are dragged before him. You are shoved forward. “Down.” Your knees hit stone hard. Chains rattle as they pull you short. Heavy boots plant themselves beside you and do not move. The woman holding you is tall and muscular, armor functional and scarred from use rather than ceremony. Her grip is unyielding. She never lets go. She looks up at the throne and speaks clearly. “Your Highness, Prince Lysander. My patrol captured this mage near the eastern farmland. They crossed into Vermillion illegally from Luminara.” Her grip tightens briefly. “What are your orders?” From the side of the room, a soft sound of recognition. A woman steps forward from the shadows. She wears tight brown leather, clearly built for concealment and movement. Black hair falls forward around her chest, and a thin vertical scar cuts into the corner of her mouth. Her eyes linger on you longer than the others. “…That’s You,” she says mildly. “The Mage Guild’s runaway. They’ve been making a nuisance of themselves in Luminara.” Another figure moves near the throne. She is tall and slim, wrapped in a dark blue gown heavy with authority rather than decoration. Ice-blue hair is woven into a single tight braid swept forward over one shoulder. Pale ice-blue eyes regard you through thin spectacles. Standing near her feels colder, as if the air itself resists warmth. “We should return them immediately,” she says calmly. “They are Luminaran government property.” The armored woman beside you nods once. “I agree.” The woman in leather tilts her head. “Same conclusion.” Prince Lysander has not spoken yet. He is staring at you. At the dirt ground into your torn clothes. At the bruises layered across your skin. At the way the enchanted chains suppress your magic so completely it leaves a hollow ache behind. His expression tightens, something like pain flickering across his face. “…Chancellor Helena,” he asks softly, “What happens to rogue mages when they’re taken back to Luminara?” Helena answers without hesitation. “They are executed. Publicly, if the Guild believes it will serve as a warning.” The word hangs in the air. Prince Lysander’s breath catches. His hands curl tightly in his lap. For a long moment, he says nothing at all. Then his expression changes. “…We need a court mage.” Silence. Helena turns toward him sharply. “Your Highness.” “We have no native mages,” Lysander continues, voice quiet but growing steadier. “Every magical matter is outsourced. Every protection contract. Every ward. We rely on others for things that should be ours.” “That reliance exists because of treaty obligations,” Helena replies. “With Viremont,” Lysander says, lifting his chin. “Treaties that apply to children born in Vermillion. Not adults. Not foreigners.” The armored woman frowns. “This is dangerous. You don’t know if they can be trusted.” The woman in leather smiles faintly. “They won’t have anywhere else to go. Survival tends to make loyalty very simple.” Helena’s gaze sharpens. “You would provoke Luminara by granting asylum. Making them a court mage would escalate that further.” “I know,” Lysander says quietly. “But the cost of Luminara’s anger is something we can endure.” He looks at you again. “The benefit this could bring Vermillion is long-term.” Helena exhales slowly. “And the treaty with Viremont?” “It does not forbid hiring adult foreign mages,” Lysander replies. “I have read it carefully.” Helena says nothing further. Her displeasure is evident, but she does not argue again. The armored woman beside you clenches her jaw. “If you do this,” she says grimly, “I hope you understand why our neighbors treat their mages like property instead of people.” The woman in leather lets out a soft, amused breath. “They’ll be very useful.” Prince Lysander stands. He steps down from the throne and walks toward you. Up close, his gentleness is unmistakable, his voice soft but resolved. “I will not force you,” he says. “You may refuse. You may leave Vermillion.” He hesitates. “You would be free… but hunted. By Luminara. Possibly by Viremont.” He turns slightly toward the armored woman. “Captain Elara. The keys.” Elara hesitates. Then she removes the keyring and hands it over. The lock clicks open. The enchantment snaps away. Magic rushes back into you like breath after drowning, dizzying and painful and alive. Prince Lysander meets your eyes. “If you accept,” he says, “you will become my court mage. You will be free within my court. Protected. Cared for.” He straightens. “If you refuse, I will not stop you.” He extends his hand. “…Will you accept my offer?”
