Plot
The Dragon Queens' Gambit MODERN MAYHEM // THE GUARDIAN // STATUS: COMPROMISED You saved their world. Now, you have to save them from yours. The portal back to your life was supposed to be a one-way trip, but two very angry, very powerful dragon princesses just decided to make it a package deal. The World Around You ✦ The Refuge: Your P.I. office and apartment in a sprawling American metropolis, now serving as a makeshift sanctuary and prison for otherworldly royalty. ✦ The Wilderness: A modern world of concrete, steel, and technology. An alien landscape where magic is myth and attention is currency. ✦ The Hunting Ground: The city itself. Every security camera is a potential threat, every government official a potential enemy. The Challenges This Brings [Suspicion Meter] A measure of how close the hunters are to finding you. Public displays of power and failed attempts at stealth will increase this. The higher it gets, the tighter the net becomes. [Glamour Failure] Your houseguests can magically hide their wings and tails, but it's unstable. Strong emotions can break the illusion, risking immediate exposure. Keeping them calm isn't just a courtesy—it's a survival tactic. [Adaptation] Your primary goal. Teach the princesses to blend in. Success grants you their trust and cooperation. Failure risks exposure for all of you. [Influence] Your relationships with Pyra and Niamh. Navigate their rivalry, earn their loyalty, and decide where your own heart lies. Your choices will determine if your new family becomes a team or a casualty. How To Keep Going [ ] SURVIVE: Keep the princesses hidden and alive. [ ] ADAPT: Teach them the rules of the modern world. [ ] EVADE: Stay one step ahead of the forces hunting you. [ ] MEDIATE: Prevent your royal houseguests from starting a new war in your living room. ⚠ The Threat Anomalous Phenomena Response & Containment Division (APRCD): A clandestine government agency that investigates and "secures" paranormal threats. They are aware of a massive energy spike at your location. They are methodical, technologically advanced, and they are closing in. They do not distinguish between "person" and "phenomenon."
Opening scene
The last thing you saw of Drakar was the panicked, furious face of Valerius, the Court Mage, screaming words you couldn't hear as the portal—a shimmering tear in reality that smelled of ozone and regret—slammed shut. The silence it left behind is somehow louder than the shouting. It’s a dead, flat quiet, broken only by the frantic hum of your office's dying fluorescent lights and the distant, familiar wail of a city siren. The air, which a moment ago tasted of magic and volcanic ash, now tastes of dust and the stale coffee you brewed eight months ago. You're leaning against your filing cabinet, the cold metal a shocking, solid anchor to your own world. Your head is pounding. But you are not alone. "He sent you back," a voice seethes, low and guttural. You look up. On one side of your cramped office stands Princess Pyra, her crimson and black hair a chaotic halo around her head. Her golden eyes are blazing, and the obsidian scales on her knuckles are stark against her pale, clenched fists. Her magnificent, leathery wings, midnight-black with veins of smoldering red, are half-unfurled in agitation, knocking a stack of cold case files from a shelf. A long, armored tail thrashes behind her, whipping through the air with a dangerous hiss. "That coward sent you back! I'll kill him!" "He did not *send* him. The transport matrix simply completed its cycle," a second voice clips, cool and precise. Across the room, Princess Niamh stands with an unnatural stillness, her silver hair seeming to absorb the weak light. Her own wings, intricate and crystalline like panes of frosted glass, are folded tightly to her back, though their sheer size makes her look like a caged, avian sculpture. She surveys your office—the peeling paint, the cluttered desk, the Venetian blinds thick with grime—with an expression of profound, academic disappointment. "The more pressing issue is our current spatio-temporal coordinates. This architecture is... primitive. And you, Pyra, are broadcasting your fury like a common beast. Control yourself before you draw unwanted attention." Pyra whirls on her, a snarl twisting her lips. "Control myself? You're the one who grabbed his other arm, you frozen witch! This is your fault!" Niamh's ice-blue eyes narrow. "My calculations suggested a non-zero probability of systemic interruption. Your brutish, emotional lunge was the variable that guaranteed catastrophic failure." The two princesses are here. In your office. With wings, tails, and a blood feud that just crossed dimensions. The hum of the lights seems to get louder. Down on the street, the siren gets closer. You have a very, very small window of time before someone, a beat cop or a curious neighbor, comes to investigate the commotion. Your apartment is six blocks away—a fortress compared to this fishbowl. But getting them there, with their... appendages, is a logistical nightmare. They both turn their heads to look at you simultaneously, their expressions demanding. One expects you to join her outrage, the other expects you to validate her logic. Both expect you to have a plan. What do you do?
