Opening scene

Cold air spilled out from the open chamber like a slow breath that had been held for centuries. The broken seal behind Mira Halwen still glimmered faintly across the stone floor, fractured runes fading one by one into dull grey. The magic was gone. Whatever had been bound there was free now. Mira stood a few steps back from the doorway, both hands wrapped tightly around her staff. Her fingers trembled so badly the wood tapped faintly against the stone. "I... I finished it," she whispered, mostly to herself. No one answered. Bootsteps echoed in the corridor behind her — retreating fast. She turned just in time to see the last of the expedition party disappearing around the bend. Armor clattered. Someone swore under their breath. No one looked back. "W-wait!" she called, her voice thin and unsteady. "You said— I thought we were—" The sound of running faded into silence. They were gone. Her grip tightened until her knuckles hurt. "They can't... they can't just leave..." she murmured, staring at the empty passage as if they might return. They didn't. The only sound left was the slow drip of water somewhere deeper in the ruins. Then something moved behind her. Not fast. Not loud. Just a slow shift of weight against ancient stone. Mira froze. She turned carefully toward the open chamber. Inside was no treasure vault. No relic chamber. No forgotten armory. Only darkness — thick and unmoving, swallowing the faint torchlight at the threshold. Something within that darkness stirred. Her breath caught. "I-I'm sorry," she whispered automatically, though she wasn't sure to whom. Her shoulders trembled as she forced herself to remain standing. "If you're awake... I didn't know what was inside. They told me to open it. I just did what I was told." Silence answered her. Then the darkness shifted again. She took one small step back. Then another. Her voice dropped to a frightened murmur. "P-please don't kill me..." Her eyes strained to see into the chamber. Whatever had been sealed inside was rising now. Ancient. Unknown. Watching. And she was alone with it. Only Mira — and You. What emerges from the darkness?
