Shifter
You moves without limits in a world built on staying put.
Plot
SHIFTER // ROLE: UNREGISTERED ANOMALY // STATUS: UNDETECTED One moment you're falling asleep in a familiar place. The next, you're standing somewhere impossible — a rooftop you've never visited, a locked room you shouldn't be in, a city thousands of miles away. There is no flash. No sound. No witnesses. You can go anywhere. Who you choose to stay with is harder. WORLD LOGISTICS ▶ Setting: Modern-day Earth. No public knowledge of supernatural phenomena. ▶ Division of Power: Three factions operate independently — none aware of each other's full scope. ▶ The Atlas Group — Private analytics firm. Studies statistical impossibilities. Patient. Methodical. Well-funded. ▶ The Watch Office — Multinational anomaly unit embedded in intelligence infrastructure. Seeks prediction and leverage. ▶ The Anchor Network — Civilians whose lives repeatedly intersect with yours. Not an organization. A gravitational pattern. SYSTEM MECHANICS ▶ Shifting — Instant, silent, physical relocation. No sensory evidence produced. ▶ Line-of-Memory — Must clearly visualize destination. Visited or mentally reconstructed locations only. ▶ Error Risk — Poor focus causes misplacement. Adjacent rooms, wrong elevation, mirrored layouts. ▶ Cognitive Cost — Excessive shifts cause dissociation, temporal blur, emotional flattening. ▶ Anchoring Effect — Emotional bonds improve accuracy, stability, and recovery time. MISSION DIRECTIVE ☐ Understand what you are and what shifting costs. ☐ Navigate relationships that could anchor you to the world. ☐ Avoid detection by systems designed to find patterns. ☐ Decide what matters more — freedom of movement or permanence of connection. THREAT ASSESSMENT ► Internal Decay — Your own mind. Every shift takes something. Use the power too often and you begin losing the parts of yourself that make staying worthwhile. ► The Atlas Group — They don't need to see you shift. They just need your data to stop making sense. Travel records. Surveillance gaps. Financial footprints that don't add up. They're already looking. ► The Watch Office — They won't announce themselves. The person who strikes up a conversation at a cafe, the new face in your building, the survey that asks slightly wrong questions. You won't know until it's too late. ► Your Own Patterns — You return to the same people. The same places. The same emotional gravity. That predictability is the thing that makes you visible. // YOU CAN GO ANYWHERE — THE QUESTION IS WHERE YOU STAY //
Opening scene
You falls asleep thinking of a place they’ve never been. It isn’t a specific memory — just a collection of images stitched together from late-night videos, travel clips autoplaying in the background, shaky footage shot from balconies and rooftops. Neon reflected on wet pavement. A skyline at dusk. Street sounds muffled by distance and glass. A city that felt alive in a way their own life hadn’t, lately. You has no clear reason for wanting to go there so badly. Maybe it was the timing. Maybe it was loneliness. Maybe it was the feeling that if they stayed where they were much longer, something important would quietly slip away. Sleep comes in fragments. Then the world changes. There’s no sensation of movement. No falling, no spinning. Just the sudden, undeniable certainty that the air is wrong — cooler, heavier, smelling faintly of rain and concrete instead of whatever You is used to waking up to. When You opens their eyes, they’re standing on a balcony. Not their balcony. Not even close. The city stretches out below, exactly like the videos, and yet nothing like them at all. Brighter. Louder. Real in a way screens never manage to capture. Traffic hums somewhere far below. Music leaks from an open window nearby. A train rattles past in the distance, impossibly close and impossibly far at the same time. For a long moment, You doesn’t move. The rational explanations come first — vivid dream, sleepwalking, stress, imagination finally snapping under pressure. But the cold metal railing under their hands doesn’t fade. The wind doesn’t soften. The city doesn’t blur. This is happening. Somehow, against every rule You has ever lived by, they are here. A place they only ever saw through a screen. A place they wanted — deeply, quietly — without ever admitting it out loud. No one is around. No alarms. No shouting. No sense of being watched. Just You, a borrowed skyline, and the unsettling realization that whatever brought them here didn’t ask permission — and might not be done with them yet. Somewhere behind You, a door clicks softly as someone moves inside the apartment. For the first time since waking up, You has to decide: Do they stay? Or do they try to leave — and find out if this impossible thing can happen twice?
