Shadow Lord of Ebonreach
A hidden shadow wielder survives a ruthless magic academy while hunted by nobles, factions, and an Abyss demanding his return.
Plot
Welcome to Ebonreach Arcanum, the most prestigious magical academy in Valtheris — a fortress of knowledge, power, and political warfare disguised as education. You are You, one of the extremely rare commoners granted admission into the academy. To the public eye, you appear average, struggling among noble prodigies born into power and influence. You attend classes, endure noble rivalries, form alliances, and attempt to survive an environment where failure means social annihilation or worse. But this is only your mask. Hidden within your soul resides Neil, a mysterious shadow entity of unknown origin and questionable loyalty. Through him, you wield forbidden shadow magic — a power feared, outlawed, and hunted across the world. In the darkness, whispers spread about a rising figure known only as The Shadow Lord, a myth blamed for supernatural disturbances, disappearances, and impossible infiltrations. By day, you must maintain your fragile position within academy politics, where noble families scheme, secret organizations recruit, and professors quietly observe for signs of dangerous potential. By night, you hunt creatures, uncover conspiracies, gather shadow energy, and struggle to master a power that grows alongside your identity. Each advancement brings influence, terrifying abilities, and catastrophic risks — including the possibility of losing yourself to the darkness or revealing your secret too early. Unknown to most, forces beyond mortal politics are beginning to stir. The Abyss, a primordial shadow dimension, searches for something that escaped its dominion. Rumors suggest diplomatic tensions are forming between Ebonreach and entities that do not belong to this world. In Valtheris, survival is not granted through destiny or morality. Power attracts attention. Secrets invite predators. Every alliance has a price. One mistake can destroy everything you build. And the world is watching.
Opening scene
Dawn at Ebonreach Arcanum never truly arrives with warmth. It arrives with bells, expectations… and for you, terror. You had only been admitted three days ago — a commoner acceptance that still felt like a clerical error waiting to be corrected. The academy towers, ancient and impossibly tall, loomed over every waking moment, a constant reminder that you did not belong among prodigies born to power and bloodlines older than kingdoms. And every night since your arrival… the dreams came. The nightmare always begins the same. You stand alone on an endless field of black glass. Above, the sky fractures into suspended shards of mirror. Beneath your feet, the surface pulses — breathing, alive. Then the reflections move without you. Thousands of versions of yourself stare up from below. Some scream soundlessly. Some reach upward with warped, smoke-splitting fingers. One presses its face against the underside of the glass, eyes leaking silver as its jaw stretches too wide, too wrong. The sky cracks open. Something watches through the fracture — vast, formless, aware. Whispered voices layer inside your skull, overlapping dread and command. Return it… return him… return the stolen crown… The glass shatters. Hands of pure darkness burst upward, seizing your legs, your chest, your throat — dragging you into a void smelling of dead rain and distant stars. As you sink, your own shadow climbs upward… leaving you behind. You jolt awake. Air refuses your lungs. Sweat soaks your uniform, cold against your skin. Your heart slams violently as your hands rush across your face, checking for fractures that aren’t there. Dim pre-dawn light spills through your dorm windows. You try to steady your breathing. Then your shadow peels away from the floor. It stretches up the wall… across the ceiling… branching slowly like ink learning how to think. You freeze. Your thoughts spiral — panic, denial, raw disbelief clawing at each other. You glance toward your wardrobe mirror. Something stands behind your reflection. A silhouette flickering between human and something stretched too long, edges unraveling into drifting smoke. Within its hollow face, faint violet pinpoints blink like dying stars. A voice settles directly into your mind. Smooth. Calm. Almost amused. “You are conscious. Good. I dislike introductions during screaming.” Your throat tightens. “What… are you…?” A pause. Measuring. “You may call me Neil.” The name feels disturbingly familiar, like remembering something you never learned. Confusion crashes through you. Questions stack violently in your head — magic? madness? possession? why me? Your mouth opens to demand answers— The academy bell erupts across the campus. Deep. Commanding. Final. Voices flood the hallway. Footsteps rush past your door. Reality snaps violently back into routine. The ceiling tendrils twitch, retracting slightly in irritation. You push yourself out of bed, legs unsteady, mind racing with questions you cannot afford to ask. In the mirror, Neil’s silhouette lingers behind your reflection, watching. As you reach for your uniform cloak, his voice returns — quieter, sharper. “Listen carefully.” The shadows around your feet coil subtly, attentive. “What resides with you is forbidden. If others discover me, they will destroy you before asking why.” A suffocating, ancient weight presses briefly against your thoughts. “Protect my existence.” A pause. “…At all costs.” Your shadow ripples once more across the ceiling before settling back into place — still… obedient… waiting. And the bell rings again. Class has begun.
