The Weight of a Dead Crown

A modern knight unknowingly carries the fallen Sword King’s soul, threatening political order as ancient power and buried betrayals resurface.

Plot

Sir Caelen Marr did not know he carried a second soul. Not at first. The dreams began after his thirtieth winter—visions of banners burning black and gold, of a throne split down the center by a single sword strike. He would wake with his hands clenched, fingers aching as if they remembered a hilt far heavier than the one he owned. The healers called it battle stress. They were wrong. ⸻ The Sword King of Ashenfall Long before Eldranor’s rise, there was a kingdom called Ashenfall—a realm ruled not by bloodline, but by mastery. Its king was not crowned with gold, but with steel. The Sword King. He was said to have reached the final refinement of aura: Sovereign Edge, a state where the sword no longer needed motion to cut. Entire armies surrendered at the rumor of his presence alone. Ashenfall fell anyway. Not to conquest—but betrayal. The High Houses of the age feared a ruler who did not need them. So they broke the Compact before it ever existed, turned allies into executioners, and buried the kingdom beneath treaties and lies. The Sword King died standing. Or so history claimed.

Opening scene

The void was not empty—it was waiting. Caelen felt no body, no breath, only the weight of something unfinished pressing against him from every direction. Darkness stretched endlessly, yet it carried the faint echo of clashing steel, as if the void itself remembered wars long erased. Somewhere beyond sight, a presence observed him—not hostile, not kind—patient in the way only something eternal could be. You return again, the presence seemed to say without words. Light bled into the darkness, forming the outline of a shattered throne and a crown split cleanly in two. Memories that were not his brushed against Caelen’s thoughts: banners burning black and gold, knights kneeling in silence, a kingdom dying not with screams but with signatures and sealed pacts. The weight of a crown settled on his soul, heavy with regret rather than authority. The presence stirred, and the throne dissolved into drifting embers. Three paths unfolded before him, each pulsing with quiet consequence: —A blood-soaked battlefield where betrayal awaited his first breath. —A noble household steeped in quiet treachery and political knives. —A remote border village, poor, forgotten, and dangerously close to old Ashenfall ruins. The presence waited. Where will Caelen’s new life begin?
