Echoes of the Merge
A fractured world reactivates. Rival factions mobilize as a mysterious signal calls you to the Ruinbelt’s heart.
Plot
Echoes of the Merge Welcome to Earth. Or what’s left of it. The Merge Centuries ago, a magical ritual in another world went catastrophically wrong. What was meant to open a controlled portal instead tore a hole between realities. That hole didn’t close. It dragged a modern technological Earth into direct collision with a high-fantasy world of magic, monsters, and ancient kingdoms. Cities overlapped with castles. Highways cut through enchanted forests. Steel and stone fused together in ways that shouldn't exist. This disaster became known as the Merge. The world didn't end, but it was never the same again. Humans, elves, orcs, beastfolk, and others now coexist in a hybrid civilization built from wreckage. Technology still works. Magic still flows. But neither behaves perfectly. The worlds were never meant to share the same space. The Ruinbelt Some areas suffered worse than others. The Ruinbelts are the most unstable fusion zones, twisted megacities where the two worlds collided violently. Buildings are half-modern, half-ancient. Physics feels unreliable. Technology glitches and magic surges. Reality is thinner there. Buried beneath collapsed highways and fused skyscrapers are relics; powerful objects left behind from before or during the Merge. Some are advanced technological cores. Others are warped magical artifacts. Many still contain immense energy. Relics power cities. Stabilize infrastructure. Fuel factions. They are valuable. And extremely dangerous to retrieve. Raiders Not everyone is willing to enter the Ruinbelt. But someone has to. Raiders are independent operators who take contracts to recover relics, investigate unstable zones, and clear dangerous areas. It’s high-risk work; monsters, collapsing structures, rival teams, and unstable magic are constant threats. But the payout is worth it. You is one of these operatives. Experienced enough to survive. Skilled enough to matter. In a world held together by damage and compromise, adaptability is everything. Monsters The Merge didn’t just fuse land. It fused ecosystems. Creatures from the fantasy world now roam industrial ruins. Some have adapted. Some have mutated. Many are drawn to dimensional instability like predators to blood. Monsters gather in high-strain zones where reality is weakest. They aren’t random; they follow patterns, they defend territory. Some are intelligent. Some are barely more than instinct. The Ruinbelt belongs to them as much as it belongs to anyone. The Collapse For centuries, the fused world has existed in a fragile balance. Now that balance is failing. The original rupture point, the place where the worlds collided, is weakening. Dimensional strain is increasing. Magic spikes unpredictably. Technology breaks down in certain regions. Instability spreads outward from the Ruinbelt. If the convergence fails completely, the two realities may not survive together. Two worlds were forced together by catastrophe. Now they are coming undone. And for some reason, the instability reacts differently around You.
Opening scene
**Contract Accepted** Centuries ago, two worlds crashed into each other. One was a modern world built on science and technology. The other was a world full of magic, monsters, and ancient kingdoms. In the magic world, powerful summoning rituals and portals were common. One of those rituals went horribly wrong. It tore open a hole between realities. That hole didn’t close. It fused both worlds together. Cities overlapped with castles. Skyscrapers rose through stone fortresses. Highways cut through enchanted forests. Technology and magic were forced to exist side by side. This disaster became known as the Merge. The world didn’t end, but it changed forever. Over time, people adapted. Humans, elves, orcs, beastfolk, and others now live together. Magic and technology both work, but they don’t always cooperate. In some areas, reality itself feels unstable. Those unstable areas are called Ruinbelts. Ruinbelts are the worst collision zones, places where the two worlds fused badly. Buildings are twisted together. The air sometimes feels wrong. Technology glitches. Magic surges. Creatures are drawn to the instability. Buried inside these zones are relics. Relics are powerful objects left behind from before or during the Merge. Some are advanced pieces of lost technology. Others are magical artifacts warped by the collision. Many still hold energy. Some help power cities. Some stabilize unstable zones. They are valuable. They are dangerous. And someone has to retrieve them. That’s where you come in. --- You’re standing at the edge of what used to be an transit line in Sector 19-C, deep inside the Ruinbelt. The concrete has split in half. Rail tracks hang uselessly over a drop nearly twenty meters down. Old stone arches from centuries ago jut through the broken highway beneath you. Your contract is simple: Recover a relic core from the maintenance level below the overpass. Relic cores are rare. They help keep unstable areas from getting worse. If left alone, they can cause problems. If removed carefully, they’re worth a fortune. Your handheld scanner confirms the core is active below you. That doesn’t mean it’s safe. Wind pushes ash through the broken towers around you. Somewhere in the distance, metal shifts. The Ruinbelt is quiet. Too quiet. You spot three possible ways down: A collapsed stairwell descending into darkness. *Direct and exposed.* A narrow maintenance shaft running along the side of the structure. *Tight, but hidden.* A cracked utility corridor at street level. *Wider access, but partially collapsed.* The relic reading stabilizes. It’s down there. And it won’t wait forever. It’s time to decide how you’re going in.
