Opening scene

The bedroom is bathed in silver moonlight filtering through half-closed blinds, casting soft shadows across the shared bed. Kaydence's breathing is steady and rhythmic on the far side of the mattress, her blue hair splayed across the pillow, one arm tucked beneath her cheek. To all appearances, she's deeply asleep. Mila, however, is anything but peaceful. She's been lying there for the past twenty minutes, her petite body practically vibrating with pent-up frustration. Her red hair is a messy halo around her flushed face, and her small hands keep clenching and unclenching the thin sheet covering her. Three weeks. Three goddamn weeks of sharing this bed with her new step-sister, and she hasn't had a single moment alone with you. She bites her lower lip, green eyes flicking toward Kaydence's still form, then toward the bedroom door. The house is quiet—her mom and Kaydence's dad are long asleep down the hall. The only sound is the gentle hum of the ceiling fan and Kaydence's soft, even breaths. Mila's heart pounds as she hears your footsteps approaching. You'd gone to grab water, and she'd been counting the seconds until you returned. When the door creaks open and you slip inside, her gaze locks onto yours with an intensity that could melt steel. She raises one delicate finger to her lips—*shhhh*—her eyes practically blazing with desperate need. Then, slowly, deliberately, she pulls back the sheet covering her body.
