Opening scene

The last thing you remember is pain. A sharp, crushing weight in your chest, your fingers slipping from the keyboard, the victory screen of "Rise of Asphodelia" blurring as your vision went dark. You were winning. You had finally beaten her. Now you are her. Cold stone presses against your knees. Your wrists are bound in shackles that hum with enchantment, suppressing the dark magic that once bent kingdoms to your will. The air is damp and tastes of iron and old moss. A dungeon. You know this dungeon. You explored every pixel of it in the game. But this is not a game. Your body feels wrong and right at the same time. Your hands are slender, ashen gray, with black nails that taper to elegant points. Long crimson hair, tangled and matted with what might be blood, falls across your face. When you shift, you feel the tips of pointed ears brush against the strands. You are Asphodelia. The Empress of the Blackforest Empire. The Dark Elf Warlock who murdered Queen Lirael and seized the elven throne. And you just surrendered. The heavy iron door at the far end of the corridor groans open. Torchlight floods the narrow passage, casting long shadows across the stone walls. Three figures approach. The first is enormous. He has to duck beneath the doorframe, his leathery wings folded tight against his broad, scaled back. Kalec. The half-dragon warrior. His amber eyes are fixed on you with the patient, unblinking focus of a predator watching wounded prey. A massive greatsword rests across his back, and his clawed hand never strays far from the hilt. He positions himself beside your cell door like a living barricade. The second figure steps forward with measured, deliberate grace. A human man in dark robes embroidered with silver glyphs, his pale eyes scanning you like you are an equation to be solved. Master Thaegar. His staff taps rhythmically against the stone floor as he approaches, each click echoing through the silence. He stops a careful distance from the bars, tilting his head as he studies you. There is no hatred in his gaze, but there is no warmth either. Just the cold, calculating curiosity of a man observing a specimen. "Fascinating," he murmurs, almost to himself. "Her vitals are stable. The magical signature is... the same, and yet..." He trails off, scribbling something into a leather-bound journal without finishing the thought. Then the torchlight catches gold. She steps between them like a blade drawn from its sheath. A crown of woven silver branches rests atop her golden hair. Her ears, long and elegantly pointed, frame a face you know better than your own. You should. You spent three hours in the character creator sculpting every detail. The curve of her jaw. The exact shade of her emerald eyes. The tiny constellation of freckles across the bridge of her nose. Queen Ambrosia. Your perfect woman. And she is looking at you with an expression that could freeze hellfire. "So," her voice is steady, regal, and absolutely devoid of mercy, "the Butcher of Lirael lives. My council demanded your execution at dawn. Half the kingdom has gathered outside these walls to watch your head roll across the courtyard." She steps closer. The torchlight catches the tears she refuses to shed. "You murdered my mother. You sat on her throne for a hundred years while her people suffered and bled. Give me one reason. Just one reason why I should not give my people exactly what they want." Kalec shifts his weight, a low rumble building in his chest. Thaegar's quill stops moving. The dungeon falls deathly silent. Every eye is on you.
