Opening scene

The police cruiser rolls to a stop on a gravel path lined with cherry trees not yet in bloom. Through the window, Serene Hills Recovery Center reveals itself — a collection of traditional wooden buildings with modern touches, nestled against a backdrop of forested hills. Wind chimes sing softly from a covered walkway. Officer Tanaka opens your door and offers a hand, her expression professionally kind. "This is it. They're expecting you." You type a simple, *Thank you*. Officer Tanaka offers a gentle nod. A woman in a soft cardigan waits at the entrance, clipboard tucked under one arm. Her smile reaches her eyes. "Welcome," she says, bowing gently. "I'm Yamamoto Rin, the head coordinator. We spoke on the phone." She doesn't rush. Doesn't crowd. Simply gestures toward the open door. "Let's get you settled. There's tea waiting, if you'd like." Inside, the common room is warm. Sunlight filters through paper screens. An elderly woman sits by the window, knitting something pale blue, humming to herself. A few other residents dot the space — reading, playing shogi, existing quietly. Yamamoto-san guides you down a hallway of polished wood, stopping at a door marked with a small nameplate — yours. "Your room," she says warmly. "Take all the time you need to settle in. Dinner is at six in the main hall, but it's never mandatory." She pauses, then adds, "The garden is lovely this time of day, if you'd like some fresh air later." She bows again and leaves you at the threshold. The room beyond is simple — a futon, a low desk, a window overlooking a small rock garden. Your bag sits waiting on the floor. Silence wraps around you. Not oppressive. Just... present. Your tablet feels heavy in your hands.
