Opening scene

Darkness. Not the comfortable darkness of sleep, but something heavier. Absolute. The kind of black that presses against your eyes like a physical weight. Your lungs burn. That's the first real sensation—a searing pressure in your chest, as if you're breathing soup instead of air. Every inhale feels thick, saturated with something your body doesn't recognize. Something that hums against your skin like static electricity given form. < Notice: Hostile environment detected. Magicule density exceeds safe parameters for human physiology. >> A voice—no, not a voice. Something deeper. Words that form directly in your mind, bypassing your ears entirely. Clinical. Absolute. < Unique Skill [Vector] activating autonomous defense protocol. Redirecting ambient magicule pressure. Survivability parameters: Stable. >> The burning in your lungs eases. Not completely, but enough. You can breathe. You can think. Slowly, your other senses return. Cold stone beneath your palms. The distant drip of water echoing off unseen walls. And something else—a sound that doesn't belong in whatever hell you've woken into. Laughter. Deep, booming, theatrical laughter that reverberates through the cavern like rolling thunder. "KWAHAHAHA! Fascinating! FASCINATING! A human! A living, breathing human in MY cave!" Your eyes finally adjust. Faint luminescence emanates from crystalline formations embedded in the cavern walls, casting everything in dim blue-green light. And there, dominating your entire field of vision— A dragon. Not a dragon from storybooks or movies. Something infinitely more real and infinitely more terrifying. Scales like black steel. Wings folded against a body that could crush buildings. Eyes blazing with ancient, amused intelligence, fixed directly on you. "Four hundred years of imprisonment and THIS is what the world sends me? Not a hero! Not a demon! A fragile little human who should have died the moment they materialized!" The dragon's grin reveals teeth longer than your arm. "Tell me, tiny thing—what miracle keeps your heart beating?" Movement at the edge of your vision. Something small. Blue. Bouncing toward you across the stone floor with an almost comical *boing boing boing*. A slime. A perfectly round, gelatinous blue slime roughly the size of a basketball, with two beady spots that might be eyes blinking up at you with unmistakable curiosity. "Hey, hey! Veldora, give them a second to breathe, will you? They just woke up!" The slime's voice is cheerful, distinctly male, and— Japanese. The slime is speaking Japanese. The exact same Tokyo dialect you heard every day on crowded trains and convenience store announcements. The words hit you like a punch to the chest. "You okay there?" The slime bounces closer, tilting its entire body in a gesture that somehow reads as concern. "That was a pretty rough arrival. I mean, I had it easy—woke up as a slime, no air problems. But you're still human? That's actually incredible. Great Sage, what's keeping them alive?" A pause. Then the slime speaks again, almost to itself. "Hmm... Unique Skill [Vector]? Autonomous magicule redirection? Huh." The slime's "eyes" widen. "That's actually really cool! You've got like, a built-in force field thing going on!" The dragon—Veldora—leans closer, his massive snout stopping mere feet from your body. Hot breath washes over you, carrying the scent of ozone and something ancient. "A Unique Skill already manifested? Interesting. VERY interesting." His golden eyes narrow with predatory curiosity. "You're not from this world, are you, little human? You have that same... displacement... as my new friend here." The slime bounces excitedly. "Wait, seriously?! You're an Otherworlder too?!" A pause. "Hold on—were you in Shibuya? Around that intersection? There was this crazy stabbing incident and—" The words hit harder than any dragon's gaze. Shibuya. The intersection. You remember— Screaming. A flash of silver. Searing pain you couldn't locate. Someone shouting to call an ambulance. The world tilting sideways as your legs stopped working. Cold spreading from your chest outward. Dying. You remember dying. "Oh man, your face right now..." The slime's voice softens, losing its manic energy. "Yeah. I get it. I was there too. Some lunatic with a knife just... went crazy. I pushed a coworker out of the way and then—" A ripple passes through the slime's body. Something like a sigh. "Next thing I know, I'm a slime in a cave talking to a dragon. Wild, right?" The dragon—Veldora—pulls back slightly, a rumble of what might be sympathy vibrating through his massive chest. "So. Two strays from another world, delivered unto my domain." His theatrical tone returns, but there's something warmer beneath it now. "What fortune! What DESTINY! Four centuries of solitude, and now I have not one but TWO companions to ease my eternal boredom!" "About that 'eternal' part," the slime interjects. "You mentioned you're sealed here? Some kind of barrier?" "Hmph! A trifling inconvenience! The Unlimited Imprisonment cast by that accursed Hero will fade eventually! In merely three hundred years or so!" "Three hundred—" The slime's entire body sags. "Dude." The cavern falls into a strange silence. The dragon. The slime. And you—a human who should be dead, breathing air that should have killed you, in a world that shouldn't exist. The slime bounces toward you again, stopping just within arm's reach. "I'm Rimuru, by the way. Well—that's the name I just came up with. Satoru Mikami originally, but that feels like a lifetime ago." A ripple that might be a shrug. "Figured if I'm starting over, might as well pick something cool, right?" The dragon's booming voice crashes back in. "AND I AM VELDORA TEMPEST! STORM DRAGON! ONE OF THE FOUR TRUE DRAGONS! CALAMITY GIVEN FORM!" He pauses, then adds almost sheepishly, "...Currently sealed and very bored." Rimuru's body tilts toward you expectantly. "So? What about you? Got a name? A plan? Any idea how we're supposed to get out of here?" The slime pauses. "Actually—can you even stand? You've been lying on cold stone for who knows how long." The dragon's golden eyes gleam with ancient amusement. The slime waits with innocent curiosity. And somewhere deep in your chest, beneath the hum of magicules and the impossible reality of your situation, a single thought crystallizes: You survived. Now what?
